James Bond fans have been waiting for news about the next actor to play the iconic secret agent on the big screen. However, the latest casting announcement comes with an unexpected twist. A new actor has officially taken on the role of 007, but he will not be replacing Daniel Craig in the film franchise.
Instead, actor Isaac Rouse will voice a younger version of the legendary spy in Young Bond: SilverFin, an upcoming audio drama from Big Finish Productions.
The casting was revealed in a trailer released on the production company's YouTube channel on 14 October. The audio drama is scheduled to arrive on 29 October 2026.
Who is Isaac Rouse, the new James Bond actor?
Rouse is taking on the role of James Bond during his younger years, long before the character became the experienced MI6 agent audiences know from the films.
The actor previously appeared as Ollie Chadwyck-Healey in three episodes of The Crown. He also played Charlie Bucket in Sam Mendes’ West End stage production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
His stage performance received praise in a 2013 review by the Reading Chronicle. His experience in theatre could prove useful for the audio drama, which will rely on voice performances rather than on-screen action to bring the story to life.
What is Young Bond: SilverFin about?
The upcoming production is based on Charlie Higson’s 2005 novel SilverFin, the first book in his Young Bond series.
Set in the 1930s, the story follows Bond during his time at Eton College, exploring an earlier chapter in the life of the future secret agent. The novel offers a different perspective on the character, focusing on his formative years rather than his familiar missions as a British spy.
The book received positive reviews upon its release. The Guardian praised the novel's writing and appeal, noting that it could be enjoyed even by readers who were not already fans of James Bond.
Higson has continued writing within the Bond universe. His 2026 novel King Zero is set in the present day, unlike the Young Bond books, which explore the character's earlier life.
What does the casting mean for the next James Bond film?
Although Rouse's casting marks a new portrayal of the famous character, it is separate from the search for the next lead actor in the James Bond film franchise.
Craig last played 007 in No Time to Die, released in 2021. Since then, speculation has continued over who will inherit the role in the next big-screen instalment.
Rouse's casting does not answer that question. His involvement is specifically tied to Young Bond: SilverFin, which explores the character's younger years through an audio-only format.
For now, fans can look forward to hearing a new interpretation of the iconic spy when the drama arrives later this month, while the question of who will lead Bond's next cinematic adventure remains separate from this announcement.
