Imam suffers Islamophobic abuse after mosque unity event

AN imam endured Islamophobic abuse as he left an event to promote unity in the wake of the New Zealand attacks.

Mohammed Mahmoud said he was at the receiving end of "reckless hate and Islamophobia" after attending the Acting in Solidarity event with home secretary Sajid Javid, London mayor Sadiq Khan and other religious leaders at Regent’s Park mosque in central London on Monday (18).

The imam, who was praised for spreading peace during the Finsbury Park terror attack in July 2017, said he was subjected to abuse in two separate incidents.

“It was so sad to see such reckless hate and Islamophobia after the event and after all we have been through this week,” he was quoted as saying.

Reacting to the incident, the mayor tweeted: "The abuse Imam Mahmoud suffered, on his way home from our interfaith event to show solidarity with our friends in Christchurch, is disgusting.

"Hate crime of any kind has no place in London - and we take a zero-tolerance approach to tackling it."
