Prince Harry and Meghan are reportedly preparing to make a major change to their family life, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex expected to return to Britain later this month.
The couple are understood to be relocating with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to a non-royal property believed to be outside London. The children are expected to start school in Britain in September.
The reported move comes six years after Harry and Meghan left the UK for the US and stepped away from their roles as senior working royals.
But their return raises an intriguing question because of an issue Harry has previously described as central to whether he could bring his family back to Britain.
A very different return to royal life
Harry and Meghan are not expected to resume their former roles within the royal family.
The couple will remain private individuals and there is understood to be no prospect of a “half-in, half-out” arrangement, an option that was rejected during negotiations over their departure in 2020.
King Charles is reportedly aware of the planned move and is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more time with his son and grandchildren.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are also understood to have been informed.
Harry and Meghan are expected to retain their homes in California and Portugal, meaning the move does not necessarily represent a complete break with their life overseas.
The issue Harry once called the sticking point
The timing of the move is particularly notable because Harry has repeatedly raised concerns about bringing his family to Britain.
After losing a legal challenge over his UK security arrangements in May 2025, the Duke told the BBC that he could not see a situation in which he would bring Meghan and their children back to the UK at that point.
He also described the security dispute as the “sticking point” while expressing a desire to reconcile with members of his family.
Now, with the Sussexes reportedly preparing to return, attention has turned once again to the question of how the family will be protected while living in Britain.
Harry and Meghan have not commented
There has been no official comment from the Sussexes confirming the reported relocation.
Their reported return follows a reunion between Harry and his father at Highgrove in Gloucestershire last month.
It also comes as the couple continue their life outside the working royal family, including their ongoing media projects and homes overseas.
For a couple whose departure from Britain transformed the royal family's relationship with the media, the reported return could mark another significant chapter, but many details about what their new life in the UK will look like remain unclear.
