Ayushmann Khurrana’s Article 15 upsets Brahmin community in an Indian state

Ayushmann Khurrana in Article 15

The trailer of Ayushmann Khurrana’s upcoming film Article 15 grabbed a lot of eyeballs on social media within hours of its release. Several people praised it for its hard-hitting concept and realistic approach.

While the majority of people have liked the trailer and are looking forward to watching the movie in cinemas, certain things have not gone down well with a section of the society.  The movie, as we all know, is based on the 2014 Badaun murder and rape case that shook entire India.

According to reports, the Brahmin community in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is not happy with the way their community is being shown in this film. “If the film is based on the Badaun incident, where was the need to turn the accused into Brahmins? It is obvious that the intention is to malign the Brahmin community. We have started creating awareness about the issue and we will not allow the film to release here,” says Kushal Tiwari a young student leader, who is a member of the Parshuram Sena, a Brahmin outfit.

Tiwari goes on to add that if his community can stall the release of Deepika Padukone-starrer Padmaavat (2018), then why can’t Brahmins fight for their honour in this film? “We are launching a campaign on the social media and we have also been trying to contact the film director Anubhav Singh but he has not been taking our calls,” he said.

Kushal Tiwari further says that when the makers were shooting the film in Lucknow in March and April, they had no idea about the storyline of the film and hence they decided not to protest back then.

Article 15 is directed by Anubhav Sinha, whose last film Mulk (2018) was also based on a sensitive issue. The filmmaker is yet to issue any statement on the treats given by the Brahmin community. The movie is set to release on 29th June.
