Akshay Kumar confirms digital debut; signs Amazon Prime Original The End

After wooing cinephiles with a series of Bollywood blockbusters, Indian superstar Akshay Kumar is now set to impress the global audience with his forthcoming Amazon Prime Original, The End (working title). The actor confirmed his digital debut with the high-profile project on Tuesday in Mumbai.

The show will have a perfect mix of everything: action, suspense and thriller. Abundantia Entertainment, which has previously worked with the superstar on such successful films as Airlift (2016) and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), will produce The End for Amazon Prime Video. They are also producing the Abhishek Bachchan starrer Breathe 2 for the streaming media giant after delivering a global hit in the form of Breathe.

“The scale at which ‘The End’ is being conceived is enormous and speaks of our passion for creating breakout programming across genres,” said Jennifer Salke, Head, Amazon Studios.

When asked what led him to join digital bandwagon, Akshay Kumar said, “My Son Aarav wanted me to work on digital platform and here I am.”

The announcement comes after Amazon revealed six new Indian originals last month at TCA. Some of these new originals include romantic musical Bandish Bandits, crime thriller The Last Hour, an untitled investigative thriller from Sudip Sharma and a youth-based political drama from successful filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar.

UK becomes key hurdle for Paramount's £81 billion Warner Bros. Discovery takeover

  • The UK government is considering intervening in Paramount Skydance's proposed £81 billion ($110 billion) takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
  • Ministers want to assess the deal's impact on media plurality, news diversity and streaming services.
  • Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have until July 6 to respond before a decision is made.

The Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger has cleared several major regulatory hurdles around the world, but the proposed £81 billion ($110 billion) deal is now facing fresh scrutiny in the UK. The British government is considering intervening on public interest grounds, raising the possibility of further delays to one of the largest media transactions in recent years.

The potential intervention centres on concerns over media plurality, news diversity and the future of television and streaming services available to UK audiences. If ministers decide to proceed, the transaction could face a more detailed investigation despite already receiving approvals in markets including the US, China, Australia, Germany, France and Saudi Arabia.
