Sonali Bendre diagnosed with cancer

Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre has been diagnosed with cancer. The 43-year-old took to Twitter on Wednesday (4) to reveal that she is currently undergoing treatment in New York.

"Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball," the actress said in a statement. "I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them.

"There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I've received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful," she said.

The Hum Saath Saath Hain actress said she was prepared to take this battle "head on" and the support of her family and friends have been a great blessing.

This news comes just months after another Bollywood actor opened up about his own fight with cancer.

Irrfan Khan, who is also popular in Hollywood for his work in movies such as Life of Pi and Namesake, is currently in London receiving treatment for neuroendocrine cancer. He opened up about his diagnosis in a tweet back in March and had sought privacy as he and his family dealt with the news.

Yash, who plays the demon king Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, says his portrayal was shaped by one clear goal: making the character relatable beyond Indian audiences.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, where the film was presented alongside major Hollywood releases, the actor said he worked to strip away the purely mythological reading of the role.

"I have tried to internalise the whole essence of Ravana and tried to make him as human as possible at times," Yash told Reuters.

"It is important for people to relate to him, and since we have global ambitions, we need to make it familiar to a Western audience as well."
