The internet has been set on fire ever since Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson took over the streets of Mumbai on their final day in the city. In an Instagram video shared by the paparazzi, the duo was seen casually strolling hand in hand. The two were spotted at the Oval Maidan in Churchgate, marvelling at and immersing themselves in Mumbai's historic architecture. Their public appearances have cleared the air and silenced separation speculations months after breakup rumours surfaced online.
The couple, who have been dating since 2017, typically maintain a low profile and rarely make public appearances. However, they seemed to be relishing their leisurely stroll, drawing significant attention from fans. At one point, Chris interacted and chatted with a few fans who were nearby. While Dakota was seen in a chic black maxi dress with black-and-white sneakers, Chris looked casual in a blue T-shirt, black trousers, and a cap.
Chris and Dakota also visited several famous historic sites in India, including temples. Together they visited the Babulnath Temple on their first day in Mumbai after landing in India last week. While Dakota donned a printed cotton suit with a dupatta gracefully wrapped over her head as a mark of reverence, Chris, on the other hand, sported a soft pastel blue kurta with a Rudraksha mala. In a heartfelt moment, Dakota leaned in to whisper a prayer into Nandi's ear, which is a symbolic move believed to bring blessings that fulfil aspirations and desires, garnering attention online. While Chris was preoccupied with his shows, Dakota went out exploring Mumbai with actors Sonali Bendre and Gayatri Joshi, seeking blessings at Siddhivinayak Temple and also visiting designer Sabyasachi’s flagship store in Mumbai.
Coldplay is in India for five sold-out shows as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. The band recently performed their inaugural concert in Mumbai at the DY Patil Stadium on January 18, followed by another concert on January 19. They have another show at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday (21). Following that, the band will travel to Ahmedabad for two gigs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, one on January 25 and the other on January 26.
The band also extended gratitude to fans on social media, writing, "We are so happy and thankful to be here in India," along with a jovial photo of Chris Martin. During the concert, the band further delighted the audience by chanting, "Shah Rukh Khan Forever," creating an electrifying moment in the stadium that instantly became a social media sensation.
Several Indian celebrities, including Suhana Khan, Gauri Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, and Amitabh Bachchan's granddaughter Navya Nanda, attended the show and shared pictures and videos online. Mrunal Thakur shared a magical video on Instagram captioned: “Coldplay… 'Cause you’re a sky full of stars. You’re a sky full of stars… Such a heavenly view."
Coldplay returned to India after an eight-year hiatus, having last performed in the country in 2016 at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai. The band's setlist included iconic tracks such as "Yellow," "The Scientist," "Clocks," "Fix You," "Viva La Vida," "Paradise," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Adventure of a Lifetime." The stunning stadium spectacle also featured spellbinding laser displays, dazzling fireworks, and synchronised LED wristbands. Alongside Chris Martin, the band comprises guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer and percussionist Will Champion, and manager Phil Harvey.

Trump praises Usha Vance, the first Indian-American Second Lady

US president Donald Trump remarked that Usha Chilukuri Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, could have been his vice president, joking, "she is smarter, but the line of succession didn’t work that way."
Usha, 39, made history on Monday as the first Indian-American and Hindu to serve as Second Lady after her husband was sworn in as the 50th vice president of the United States.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Usha wore a pink coat, held the Bible in one hand, and their daughter Mirabel Rose in the other as JD Vance took the oath of office.
The daughter of Indian immigrants from Vadluru village in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, Usha is also one of the youngest Second Ladies in US history, following Jane Hadley Barkley, who assumed the role at age 38 during Alben Barkley’s vice presidency.
After Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, he addressed supporters in an overflow room and praised his team, including JD Vance, for his successful re-election campaign.
"I watched JD over a period of time. I endorsed him in Ohio. He was a great senator and a very, very smart one," Trump said, adding, "The only one smarter is his wife." The comment was met with laughter in the room.
Turning to JD, Trump added, "I would have chosen her, but somehow the line of succession didn’t work that way."
Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a mentor to Usha, administered the oath to JD Vance. Usha had clerked for Kavanaugh and chief justice John Roberts during her legal career.
Usha, raised in California by Indian immigrant parents, reflected on her background during the Republican National Convention in July.
"I grew up in San Diego, in a middle-class community with two loving parents, both immigrants from India, and a wonderful sister," she said, adding, "That JD and I could meet at all, let alone fall in love and marry, is a testament to this great country."
The couple, who met at Yale Law School and married in 2014, have three children: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. Usha’s Hindu roots have drawn attention since JD Vance became Trump’s running mate.
JD has credited Usha with helping him deepen his Christian faith and described her as "way more accomplished" during a 2020 interview.
Addressing the challenges of their interfaith marriage, Usha said, “There are a lot of things that we just agree on, I think, especially when it comes to family life, how to raise our kids. And so I think the answer really is, we just talk a lot.”

Report claims colonial Britain drained India of £52.7 trillion

A REPORT by Oxfam International claims that between 1765 and 1900, £52.7 trillion was transferred from India to Britain during colonial rule.
Released during the World Economic Forum in Davos, the report, Takers Not Makers: The unjust poverty and unearned wealth of colonialism, asserts that the British Empire stifled India’s industrial growth and left the nation impoverished.
The report highlights that in 1750, India accounted for 25 per cent of global industrial output, which declined to 2 per cent by 1900 due to British protectionist policies targeting Indian textiles.
Oxfam attributed this decline to colonial economic exploitation, calling for reparations and a shift to a more equitable global economic system.
The £52.7 tn figure is credited to Indian economists Utsa Patnaik and Prabhat Patnaik. Their earlier estimate of £36.6 tn covered the period from 1765 to 1938, while the updated figure aligns with more recent analyses, reported The Times.
The report also connects historical wealth extraction to modern global inequality, suggesting that colonial exploitation laid the foundation for the current wealth of many billionaires.
The call for reparations echoes similar appeals, including those by Congress Party politician Shashi Tharoor, who argued in his 2016 book, An Era of Darkness, that Britain owes reparations for the systematic exploitation of India.
The legacy of colonialism continues to evoke strong reactions. At a recent Coldplay concert in Mumbai, lead singer Chris Martin thanked the Indian audience for their forgiveness despite Britain’s colonial past, drawing applause and renewed discussions on the subject.

Vivek Ramaswamy steps down from government role, eyes Ohio governor bid

ASIAN American entrepreneur-turned-politician Vivek Ramaswamy announced on Monday that he is stepping down from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Ramaswamy said he plans to focus on preparing for a potential run for governor of Ohio.
“It was my honour to help support the creation of DOGE. I’m confident that Elon & team will succeed in streamlining the government,” Ramaswamy, 39, said in a post on X.
Donald Trump, after his November 2024 presidential election victory, had announced the formation of DOGE, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ramaswamy leading the agency.
Ramaswamy’s announcement came on the same day Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.

The White House acknowledged Ramaswamy’s contributions to DOGE. “Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE. He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure that we announced today,” Anna Kelly, a spokesperson for the Trump Team, told PTI.
“We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last two months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again,” Kelly added.
Ramaswamy is considering the timing for a formal announcement of his Ohio gubernatorial campaign, expected in 2026.
If elected, he would become the first Indian American Governor of Ohio. So far, only three Indian Americans have served as governors in the US: Bobby Jindal in Louisiana and Nikki Haley in South Carolina, both Republicans.
Ramaswamy, who previously ran an unsuccessful campaign during the Republican presidential primaries, endorsed Trump after exiting the race.
His announcement for the Ohio governor run could come as early as next week.

Teen pleads guilty to Southport murders; government announces inquiry

A TEENAGER admitted on Monday to murdering three young girls during a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in Southport last July, eliminating the need for the trial that was set to begin at Liverpool Crown Court.
The government has announced a public inquiry into the attack, which triggered nationwide riots.
Axel Rudakubana, 18, unexpectedly pleaded guilty to the murders of three children and to 10 counts of attempted murder.
He also admitted to producing the poison ricin and possessing an al Qaeda training manual.
The attack, which took place in the northern English town, shocked the country and raised questions about government failures to prevent the tragedy.
Hours after his plea, prime minister Keir Starmer said the attack was "a moment of trauma for the nation" and stated that the inquiry would examine "grave questions" about the state’s failure to protect the victims.
Rudakubana had previously been referred to Prevent, the UK’s counter-radicalisation programme, three times, but no action was taken.
Authorities confirmed he had also been in contact with police, courts, and mental health services.
Ursula Doyle from the Crown Prosecution Service said, "It is clear that this was a young man with a sickening and sustained interest in death and violence. He has shown no signs of remorse."
The victims—Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9—were attending a summer dance workshop when the attack occurred.
Doyle described it as a "meticulously planned rampage."
Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time, initially refused to confirm his name at previous hearings, leading to "not guilty" pleas being entered on his behalf in December.
On Monday, after consulting his lawyer, he admitted to the murders.
Judge Julian Goose said a life sentence was inevitable and scheduled sentencing for Thursday.
Anti-immigrant riots across Britain
The murders sparked large-scale unrest across Britain after false claims circulated on social media that Rudakubana, who was born in Britain, was a radical Islamist migrant.
Riots in Southport escalated to attacks on mosques and asylum-seeker housing nationwide.
Over 1,500 people were arrested during the disturbances, which Starmer attributed to far-right groups.
The Guardian reported that Rudakubana, the son of Christian immigrants from Rwanda, had been referred to Prevent over concerns about his interest in online material on school shootings and past terrorist incidents.
However, he was not deemed a terrorism risk.
Home secretary Yvette Cooper announced the inquiry, saying it would provide answers to the victims’ families about how the attack occurred.

Top female wrestler Babita Kumari Phogat today said she would like to set up an academy to train young wrestlers.
"I would like to start an academy wherever we get the facilities. If it is in Haryana, there are so many sportspersons. I think you will get one wrestler from every household," she said.
Phogat, who won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, said she would participate at the CWG and Asian Games next year and also the coming World Championships.
The 27-year-old, who was speaking at an event of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), said women can achieve any goal if they have "madness".
Phogat, whose sister Geeta Phogat and cousin Vinesh are also wrestlers, said more international exposure would help them in achieving better results.
Phogat, who was on her maiden visit to Hyderabad, said she would like to continue in the 53 kg category.
She said international wrestlers now take Indian sportswomen more seriously.
