THE population of Indian-origin people in America grew by 38 per cent in seven years between 2010 and 2017, a South Asian advocacy group has said in its latest demographic report.
There are at least 630,000 Indians who are undocumented, a 72 per cent increase since 2010, the South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) said in its snapshot.
The increase in illegal Indian-Americans can be attributed to Indian immigrants overstaying visas, it said.
Nearly 250,000 Indians overstayed their visa in 2016, therefore, becoming undocumented, it said.
In general, the population of American residents tracing their roots to South Asia grew by 40 per cent. In real terms, it increased from 3.5 million in 2010 to 5.4 million in 2017, SAALT said.
The Nepali community grew by 206.6 per cent since 2010, followed by Indian (38 per cent), Bhutanese (38 per cent), Pakistani (33 per cent), Bangladeshi (26 per cent) and Sri Lankan populations (15 per cent).
There are currently at least 4,300 active South Asian Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.
As of August 2018, there are approximately 2,550 active Indian DACA recipients. Only 13 per cent of the overall 20,000 DACA eligible Indians have applied and received DACA.
SAALT said that as far as DACA recipients from other countries are concerned, there are 1,300 from Pakistan, 470 from Bangladesh, 120 from Sri Lanka and 60 from Nepal.
The immigrant population density of the country shows that undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants live in New York (19,000); Michigan (4,000); Virginia (3,000); and California (2,000).
The demographic snapshot is based primarily on Census 2010 and the 2017 American Community Survey.
According to the report, income inequality has been reported to be the greatest among Asian Americans.
Nearly one per cent of the approximately five million South Asians in the US live in poverty.
SAALT said there has been a rise in the number of South Asians seeking asylum in the US over the last 10 years.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained 3,013 South Asians since 2017.
US Customs and Border Patrol arrested 17,119 South Asians between October 2014 and April 2018 through border and interior enforcement, it said.
According to SAALT, since 1997, more than 1.7 million dependent spouses of H-1B visa holders have received H-4 visas.
In 2017, 136,000 individuals received H-4 status. Nearly 86 per cent of H-4 visa holders are from South Asian countries.
In 2015, DHS granted work authorisation to certain H-4 visa holders. As of December 2017, approximately 127,000 visa holders were approved for H-4 EAD, the report said.
Nearly 472,000 or 10 per cent of the approximately five million South Asians in the US live in poverty, the report said.
Among South Asian Americans, Pakistanis (15.8 per cent), Nepalis (23.9 per cent), Bangladeshis (24.2 per cent), and Bhutanese (33.3 per cent) had the highest poverty rates, it said.
Bangladeshi and Nepali communities have the lowest median household incomes out of all Asian American groups, earning $49,800 and $43,500 respectively, it said.
Nearly 61 per cent of non-citizen Bangladeshi American families receive public benefits for at least one of the four federal programmes including TANF, SSI, SNAP and Medicaid/CHIP, 48 per cent of non-citizen Pakistani families and 11 per cent of non-citizen Indian families also receive public benefits, the report said.
In the lead up to the 2020 elections, South Asians are becoming an increasingly powerful segment of the American electorate, SAALT said.
According to the Current Population Survey (CPS), 49.9 per cent of voting-age, Asian American citizens cast a ballot in 2016. The number of Asian American voters in the last decade has nearly doubled from about two million voters in 2001 to 5 million voters in 2016.
Of these, Indians account for more than 1.5 million, followed by Pakistanis (222,252) and Bangladeshi (69,825), SAALT added.

Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs, while Anderson is England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
INDIA and England will play their upcoming five-Test series in the UK for a new trophy named after Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.
According to a report by the BBC, the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be unveiled ahead of the series, which begins at Headingley on June 20. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declined to comment, the report added.
Earlier, Test series between the two sides in England were played for the Pataudi Trophy, named after Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.
In March, the ECB informed the Pataudi family of its intention to retire the trophy.
Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs. The 52-year-old played 200 Tests between 1989 and 2013 and holds numerous records in both Tests and ODIs.
Anderson is England’s all-time leading wicket-taker and the most successful pace bowler in Test cricket with 704 wickets.
Since retiring from international cricket last summer, the 42-year-old Anderson has worked as England’s bowling consultant and currently plays county cricket for Lancashire, having signed a contract extension recently.
Tendulkar and Anderson played against each other in 14 Tests. Anderson dismissed Tendulkar nine times — the most by any bowler.
England are the current and final holders of the Pataudi Trophy, having retained it with a 2-2 draw in the series held across 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The move to rename the trophy follows a similar initiative by England and New Zealand, who last year introduced the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, named after Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe.

Worshippers are strongly encouraged to walk to the mosque if possible
A major change has been announced regarding Birmingham’s Eid ul Adha 2025 celebrations, with the annual Eid in the Park event cancelled due to bad weather.
Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre (GLMCC), which organises the city’s large outdoor Eid prayer, confirmed that this year’s gathering at Small Heath Park will no longer go ahead. The decision was made following heavy rainfall and a forecast of continued poor weather across Thursday and into the morning of Eid ul Adha, which falls on Friday, 6 June.
Instead, prayers will now be held indoors at the mosque itself, with staggered prayer sessions scheduled throughout the morning to accommodate the thousands of worshippers expected to attend. The mosque, located in the Small Heath area of Birmingham, follows Eid dates based on Saudi Arabian announcements. This year, both Saudi Arabia and the UK are observing Eid ul Adha on the same date, although some countries will mark it on Saturday, 7 June.
GLMCC said in a statement: “Green Lane Masjid will be holding Eid ul Adha prayers indoors at the Masjid. This is due to heavy rain today and a forecast of continued rain throughout the day and into tomorrow morning. We have assessed the park and, given the current and expected weather conditions, we have made the decision to move the Eid prayers indoors for the safety and comfort of all attendees.”
The Eid in the Park event, originally scheduled for 9am on Friday at Small Heath Park, typically attracts thousands of people from across the city and beyond. The cancellation marks a significant change to the city’s Eid ul Adha celebrations.
To manage the large turnout, GLMCC has arranged five indoor prayer sessions at its mosque on Friday, 6 June:
6 am – Sheikh Hassan Ali
7 am – Sheikh Abdul Hadi
8 am – Sheikh Aqeel Mahmood
9am – Qari Zakaullah Saleem
10 am – Sheikh Hafeezullah
Men will use the Main Prayer Hall, the Sisters' Prayer Hall, and the Basement. Entry will be via Doors H and G (Little Green Lane, opposite Morrisons) and exit via Doors A and G. Women will be accommodated in the Community Hall and School Area, with entry through Door E (Clock Tower entrance) and exit through Doors F and F1. A one-way system will be in operation throughout the premises.
GLMCC has advised attendees to bring their own bags for shoes, as part of efforts to reduce plastic usage. “There is a provision at the Masjid for bags but we are conscious of reducing the usage of plastic,” the statement added.
Worshippers are strongly encouraged to walk to the mosque if possible. Those who need to drive are asked to park considerately, including using the nearby Morrisons car park, avoid blocking driveways or other vehicles, and allow extra time for traffic. Courteous and patient behaviour is being urged throughout the event.
Despite the change in location, GLMCC aims to ensure a smooth and safe celebration for all. Worshippers are still expected to come together in prayer and reflection, sharing greetings of Eid Mubarak as the Muslim community marks one of the most significant festivals of the Islamic calendar.

Extensively shot in the UK and laced with a contemporary sensibility, the Nadeem Baig-directed comedy marks a distinct tonal shift for an actor best known for culturally rooted blockbusters.
Calm and composed during his recent London visit to promote the film, the massively popular star sat down with Eastern Eye to reflect on his celebrated journey, the making of Love Guru, reuniting with Mahira Khan, and the secret to his high success rate.

How do you reflect on your distinguished three-decade career? (Smiles) That is a tricky question. I do not have a short answer, Asjad. I have been fortunate to work across diverse genres in both film and television, as an actor and producer. I have been part of successful projects I believe in. Now, I feel ready to take on something really big – like an international production that the whole world will watch.
You have a high success rate. How do you choose your projects? I have always gone with my gut whenever possible, and it has served me well. I am instinctive and often have a sense of how an idea will take shape. I am drawn to stories that are emotionally relatable. For example, when I received the script for Mere Paas Tum Ho, I had a strong belief that it would resonate with audiences. It was emotional and grounded – that is essential for a television drama.
As a sought-after star and successful producer, what other key elements do you look for in a project? The story must be backed by strong writing, a talented cast, and a capable director. I consider all those factors. I always begin a project with the aim that it will succeed and connect with viewers. But at the heart of it, there must be a relatable story. Each character should serve a purpose – not just the lead.
Tell us more about that. You often see projects where some characters feel unnecessary – I do not believe in that. In strong dramas, every character, including those in smaller roles, must matter. If the idea is good, the story is relatable, and the cast is strong, the project will work.
Your drama serials are especially known for strong writing. Yes, that is very important. Writing comes first – the performances follow. Mere Paas Tum Ho was a massive success largely because of the powerful dialogues.
What attracted you to your new film Love Guru? Television dramas are usually serious, so I enjoy delivering fun, entertaining films for cinema audiences. I have noticed that the more entertaining a Pakistani film is, the better it performs. Love Guru is a fun, contemporary film.
This film is different from your usual work. Were you encouraged by the trailer’s positive response? Audiences enjoy my culture-specific films like London Nahi Jaunga and Punjab Nahi Jaungi, but this time I deliberately chose a contemporary romantic comedy. The trailer response gave me a lot of confidence. People said the visuals looked fresh and the cast looked great. The music and locations were also well received. It is very different from my earlier films, and I am hopeful audiences will turn out for it.

Tell us a little about the film. The trailer captures the essence. I play a love guru who helps people find love and get married – until he is tasked with breaking up the forthcoming wedding of the character played by Mahira (Khan). What happens next, you will have to see in the film.
What is Mahira Khan like as a co-star? She is very good and easy to work with. We have been friends and colleagues for a long time, and this is our third project together. That comfort level is there. She knows her craft, works hard, and never throws tantrums – which can happen with some co-stars. Mahira remains focused and professional, and that makes the entire process more enjoyable.
You have formed a dream team with Love Guru director Nadeem Baig, with all your films together doing well. What makes him stand out? He is a gifted storyteller and supported by a great team. We have strong mutual understanding – if I do not like something, he listens, and vice versa. I also share a strong rapport with the writer, so we have a solid creative team. Nadeem does not rely on flashy camera work for the sake of it – he focuses on content, making sure everything shown on screen feels real.
Could you elaborate on that approach? Even when a scene is far-fetched, he presents it in a believable way. In some comedies, things can become mindless – but with Nadeem, it still makes sense. That is his strength – presenting things in a way that feels like they could actually happen, which makes it more relatable.
What was it like shooting this film in the UK? (Laughs) Very expensive. Thankfully, many of our friends in the UK helped us. We had a brilliant production team who worked hard and kept us on schedule. Sometimes we travelled up to three hours for a shoot, but we always managed. The weather was a challenge – it was cold and raining – but it turned out well. We filmed in October and captured the beauty of autumn. The film has some stunning visuals.
How do you view the progress of Pakistani cinema in recent years? It was strong from 2015 to 2019. Then, it slowed down due to Covid. Films like London Nahi Jaunga and The Legend of Maula Jatt showed the potential of Pakistani cinema. If people like a film, they will come to the cinema. Streaming is great, but nothing compares to watching a film with 200–300 people on the big screen. Cinema still has that larger-than-life magic.
What was your experience like working on The Crown? I loved the entire experience. It was a completely different world. I have never seen such professionalism before. It was enriching, both as an actor and a producer. An interesting part was working on two separate episodes, each directed by different people. Season five had five directors, each handling two episodes. Each director focused only on their specific episodes, so it was fascinating to work on one role with two distinct directing styles.
