Just a year before millennium, we got to witness many amazing films on the big screen. The year 1999 was quite a great year for Bollywood as there were many films that left a mark at the box office and also got a special place in the heart of moviegoers.
But well, today, we are here to make you feel old and make you recollect that a few of your favourite Bollywood films complete 20 years of its release this year.
Biwi No. 1
Directed by David Dhawan, Biwi No. 1 starred Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Anil Kapoor, and Tabu. The movie released during World Cup, but still emerged as a super hit at the box office. Though Karisma was in the titular role, Sushmita Sen with her glamorous avatar stole everyone’s heart.
Haseena Maan Jaayegi
While nowadays directors take long breaks between their two films, David Dhawan, 20 years ago had two releases in the same year. Not just Biwi No. 1, Dhawan also tasted success with Sanjay Dutt and Govinda starrer Haseena Maan Jaayegi in 1999. Like most of the David Dhawan movies in the 90s, Karisma played the female lead in this one as well.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic saga Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam also completes 20 years of its release this year. The movie starring Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Ajay Devgn was one of the biggest hits of 1999 and Salman and Aishwarya’s pairing was loved by the audiences. Thanks to the movie Salman and Aishwarya also started dating each other, but their relationship ended on a sour note.
Hum Saath Saath Hain
In the 90s Sooraj Barjatya gave us many amazing family dramas and one of them was the 1999 release Hum Saath Saath Hain. It was a perfect ensemble cast film starring Mohnish Bahl, Tabu, Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, and Karisma Kapoor. We wonder will Rajshri ever give us a movie like Hum Saath Saath Hai again.
Khoobsurat
‘Ae Shivani, Tu Lagti Hai Nani, Tu Item Purani…’ How can we forget this song from Sanjay Dutt and Urmila Matondkar starrer Khoobsurat? It’s been 20 years, but Ae Shivani is the song that has stuck in every moviegoer's head. Khoobsurat was a wonderful rom-com that had impressed one and all.
Sarfarosh
Nowadays we are seeing many films based on our unsung heroes and police officers. 20 years ago came Aamir Khan starrer Sarfarosh that won our hearts. Aamir’s performance as ACP Ajay Singh Rathore was applauded and now, after 20 years of its release, there are reports of the film’s sequel doing the rounds.
Sooryavansham
This Amitabh Bachchan starrer was a big flop at the box office. But it has achieved cult status and it is one of the most viewed films on television. Big B played a double role in the film and his performance was appreciated.
Vaastav
It is said that Vaastav is the film that revived the career of Sanjay Dutt and got him back in the league of biggies. The movie had Sanjay Dutt playing the role of a local goon and he simply nailed it as Raghu. While nowadays the actor is finding it difficult to give a hit and prove his mettle once again as an actor, 20 years ago for Vaastav he won Best Actor award at several award functions.
