Burglar, who suffered injuries after grabbing a samurai sword, jailed for around four years

A BURGLAR who suffered life-threatening injuries after grabbing a samurai sword in a house raid has been jailed.

Rehan Malik, 23, suffered a severe wound to his hands after he grabbed the blade of the sword, which the homeowner had been using to defend herself.

Malik was one of three intruders who broke into the Bradford property on October 25. The gang were attempting to flee with an Audi S3 when the car got stuck in the garage doors.

As the robbers tried to escape, the homeowner pointed the sword at Malik in an effort to make him stay until the police arrived.

He grabbed the blade, cutting his hands in the process. Although the three perpetrators escaped, Malik was later tracked down at a hospital in Barnsley.

The court heard he could have died from the blood loss and spent five days in hospital. He had lost feeling in his hands and needed a blood transfusion.

The injuries may leave him  permanently disabled, his barrister Shufqat Khan said.

The judge called the female victim blameless and said she was frightened that Malik would use the sword against her. Malik pleaded guilty to all the offences.

He was jailed for 32 months for the burglary and 12 months for dangerous driving (offences which predated the burglary).
