Wait, what? Prabhas to play Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana?

Before the theatrical release of his latest film Chhichhore (2019), filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari had said that he will begin work on his next, an ambitious film based on Indian epic the Ramayana, right after the Sushant Singh and Shraddha Kapoor starrer hits the theatres. Now that Chhichhore has released and turned out to be a huge hit at the box-office, Nitesh Tiwari has reportedly begun work on Ramayana in full swing.

Allu Aravind, Namit Malhotra and Madhu Mantena have collaborated for the first time to make one of the most ambitious projects of Indian cinema. It is a trilogy which will star actors from across the industries. Speculations are rife that superstar Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone have been cast to play Ram and Sita respectively in the film. The latest we hear that now the makers have initiated talks with Baahubali star Prabhas to play the character of Ravana in the big-ticket venture.

Spilling some more beans, a source in the know informs an entertainment portal that the makers have already bounced the idea off to Prabhas, and the actor and his team will take a decision soon.

"The makers have given the film a budget of Rs 600 crore which is also the highest ever that has been sanctioned for an Indian film. It will be released across India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. So, they have already bounced the idea off to Prabhas. The team wants the Baahubali star to come on board as Ravana because they feel he will add more personality to the character. He also has the build of Ravana and with Hrithik and Deepika playing Ram and Sita, it will be perfect casting, too. But the deal has not been locked. They have just initiated talks and Prabhas and his team will decide whether they want to do the film or not," the source says.

Well, if Prabhas agrees to come onboard, it will be his next multilingual film after the huge success of Saaho.

Highlights:

  • Government to criminalise porn that shows strangulation or suffocation during sex.
  • Part of wider plan to fight violence against women and online harm.
  • Tech firms will be forced to block such content or face heavy Ofcom fines.
  • Experts say the ban responds to medical evidence and years of campaigning.

You see it everywhere now. In mainstream pornography, a man’s hands around a woman’s neck. It has become so common that for many, especially the young, it just seems like part of sex, a normal step. The UK government has decided it should not be, and soon, it will be a crime.

The plan is to make possessing or distributing pornographic material that shows sexual strangulation, often called ‘choking’, illegal. This is a specific amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill. Ministers are acting on the back of a stark, independent review. That report found this kind of violence is not just available online, but it is rampant. It has quietly, steadily, become normalised.
