Super 30 to hit Chinese screens soon?

Starring Hrithik Roshan as award-winning mathematician Anand Kumar, Super 30 was one of the most successful films of 2019. It was not an out-and-out commercial film boasting of regular song and dance routines Hindi films are generally known for. In spite of that, the Vikas Bahl directorial went on to do outstanding business at the domestic box-office and raked in an impressive ₹146.94 crore by the end of its lifetime run.

The latest we hear that Super 30 could be the first Bollywood film to release in China after the country gets back to normalcy in coming few months. As we know that China has almost won its war against the Coronavirus with the number of infected people coming down to a few hundred from several thousands. According to reports, Chines theatres too will be gradually opening just like other establishments.

Super 30 was applied for censorship in China. As and when the country and the industry open up, it will first get censored. And then it will get a release in the country,” Reliance Entertainment Group CEO Shibasish Sarkar informed an entertainment portal.

A trade source adds, “The people of China love such human underdog stories with the backdrop of education. Some of our Indian films like 3 Idiots (2009), Hichki (2018), and Hindi Medium (2017), etc. worked big time there with the audiences. Super 30, hence, is an ideal film for its audiences. In fact, if things go well, it can be one of the first big hits in the Chinese market post lockdown.”

Apart from Hrithik Roshan, Super 30 also stars Mrunal Thakur, Virendra Saxena, Amit Sadh and Pankaj Tripathi in important roles.

Yash says Ravana in Ramayana must connect with Western viewers as film eyes global audience

Highlights

  • Yash says he humanised Ravana to help global audiences relate to the character.
  • Asura designs in the first glimpse drew criticism for looking too Western-inspired.
  • Producer Namit Malhotra compares the film's tone to Lord of the Rings and Gladiator.
Yash, who plays the demon king Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, says his portrayal was shaped by one clear goal: making the character relatable beyond Indian audiences.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, where the film was presented alongside major Hollywood releases, the actor said he worked to strip away the purely mythological reading of the role.

"I have tried to internalise the whole essence of Ravana and tried to make him as human as possible at times," Yash told Reuters.

"It is important for people to relate to him, and since we have global ambitions, we need to make it familiar to a Western audience as well."
