‘Mr & Mrs Mahi’ Review: Rajkummar and Janhvi deliver a knockout act

Fronted by Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, Mr & Mrs Mahi is a film about a couple’s passion for cricket but it is essentially not a sports film. It centers on its leads’ journey, the ups and downs in their relationships, and how they nurture their passion for cricket, fighting against all odds.

Mahendra aka Mahi (Rao) and Mahima aka Mahi (Kapoor) meet through an arrange marriage setup and, after some hiccups, tie the knot. While Mahima is interning at a prestigious hospital in Jaipur and has a promising career ahead, Mahendra is a failed cricketer who now helps his father at their sports goods shop in the city. One fine day, Mahendra sees Mahima hitting sixes on the same cricket field where he saw his cricket dreams die. Now he decides to coach Mahima, aiming to transform her into a professional cricketer. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

Mr & Mrs Mahi presents a fresh, albeit familiar, narrative. While the storyline itself treads on predictable grounds, it is the performances that elevate Mr & Mrs Mahi beyond its conventional plot. Rajkummar Rao, known for his versatility and depth, brings a compelling mix of earnestness and determination to his role as Mahendra. His portrayal of a supportive yet demanding coach and a loving husband strikes a chord.

Janhvi Kapoor, as Mahima, delivers a commendable performance. She captures the essence of a woman who discovers her passion and talent for cricket later in life, portraying both vulnerability and strength. Her on-field sequences, where she transitions from a novice to a skilled cricketer, are particularly engaging, showcasing her dedication to the role.

The chemistry between Rao and Kapoor is palpable, providing the film with its emotional core. Their interactions, filled with moments of tension, support, and growth, anchor the narrative, making the audience root for their success both on and off the field.

The supporting cast, which includes the likes of Rajesh Sharma, Kumud Mishra, and Zarina Wahab, deserves a special mention for their contributions. Their performances add depth to the story and are not merely auxiliary but integral to the film’s texture, providing humour, conflict, and camaraderie that enrich the overall viewing experience.

Director Sharan Sharma, while navigating a storyline that doesn’t stray far from the tried-and-true formula of such films, manages to infuse Mr & Mrs Mahi with moments of genuine emotion and excitement.

Sharma’s direction ensures that the audience remains invested in Mahi’s journey, even when the plot hits predictable beats. The cricket sequences, however, could have been well-choreographed. The absence of good music is the want most keenly felt.

Overall, Mr & Mrs Mahi may not score well in all departments, but it offers a heartfelt and engaging tale driven by strong performances from its leads and a robust supporting cast. Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor's portrayals keep the audience invested, making the film a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy stories of perseverance, partnership, and the pursuit of dreams.

Mr & Mrs Mahi is out in cinemas.
