Motichoor Chaknachoor movie review: Athiya and Nawazuddin shine in this sweet rom-com

It is clearly difficult to imagine Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty romancing on the big screen. But nowadays, Bollywood writers have such different stories to offer that we have a movie starring Nawazuddin and Athiya in the lead roles and they are romantically paired opposite each other. Well, we are talking about the film Motichoor Chaknachoor.

The trailer of Motichoor Chaknachoor was hilarious and the film also has many scenes that will make you go rolling on the floor laughing. The movie is about Pushpinder (Nawaz) and Anita (Athiya). Both of them are neighbours in Bhopal and Pushpinder is a Dubai return guy. He is 36 years old and just wants a girl to get married. On the other hand, Anita, a young-carefree girl wants to get married to a guy who is settled in abroad. The two decide to get married and what happens next forms the rest of the story…

The story of Motichoor Chaknachoor is quite interesting; two people, who are thinking that they are finally getting what they want, but the twist in the tale changes everything. The screenplay in the first half is damn good. The movie starts on a funny note and then in the whole first half we are laughing continuously. But that doesn’t happen in the second half. After the interval, the film starts on a very good note and there a couple of scenes that will make you laugh out loud, but as soon as the movie takes a serious turn, it fails to keep us hooked.

However, once again the film gets better in the climax making us laugh once again. Well, we would also like to point out that the movie has a few sexist stuff and in the second half, there are a few scenes that make us wonder if we are watching a movie from the 80s.

Talking about performances, Nawazuddin Siddiqui proves his mettle once again. He is fantastic and his antics will surely make you laugh out loud. But the surprise in the film is Athiya Shetty. From the first scene to the last scene, Athiya is simply WOW! After watching Motichoor Chaknachoor, we can clearly say that she was wasted in her previous two films because of badly written characters. A special mention to Vibha Chibber who plays the role of Nawaz’s mother; she is damn good.

Overall, Motichoor Chaknachoor could have been a better film, but it’s not a bad one as well. It’s a decent-sweet rom-com.

K Anis Ahmed’s 'Carnivore' serves up satire, class war and moral rot

From the blood-soaked backstreets of Dhaka to the polished kitchens of Manhattan’s elite, K Anis Ahmed’s new novel Carnivore is as imaginative as it is provocative. A satirical thriller steeped in class tension, culinary obsession and primal survival, Carnivore follows Kash, a Bangladeshi immigrant-turned-chef who launches a high-end restaurant serving exotic meats – only to become embroiled in a sinister world of appetite and ambition.

But this is no simple tale of knives and recipes. Ahmed – a seasoned journalist, publisher, and president of PEN Bangladesh – brings a sharp eye to the grotesqueries of power and privilege. In this exclusive interview with Eastern Eye, he speaks about his passion for food, the moral murkiness of his characters, and why even the most ordinary people can spiral into extraordinary darkness.

Mahima Sharma brings bold new energy to cricket’s old guard

As the world prepares for the second edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), one of its most exciting franchises, the Meteora England Champions, is being led by a compelling force. Mahima Sharma is not just making her mark in cricket – she is quietly redefining leadership in a male-dominated industry.

In an industry long regarded as a boys’ club, Sharma brings a refreshingly unapologetic approach. She is strategic, deeply rooted in her love for the game, and proudly feminine. “Cricket has always felt like home to me,” she says. “I come from a culture where cricket is an emotion, and stepping into this role carries a great deal of responsibility. Growing up, I saw very few women leaders in cricket. To now find myself in this position 15 years later feels like coming full circle.”
