LATE great singing star Kishore Kumar gifted the world with many treasured musical memories. That is why his popularity remains decades after this death and millions globally still enjoy his superb songs.

This week, fans have the chance to take a trip down memory lane with the Crazy For Kishore concert at Ilford Town Hall on June 16. The show features Kishore’s golden hits performed by talented singers and a full live band. Eastern Eye caught up with headline singer Ketan Kansara to talk about music, Kishore and performing live...

When did you first get connected to music?

Born and brought up in the heart of Mumbai, my love of music started in my early years. I enjoyed Bollywood movies and music during my childhood. I entered singing competitions and performed at family gatherings. In my late twenties, after moving to the UK, I became inspired by Pandit Dineshji, my mentor, to take up singing seriously.

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

I was fortunate to have grown up in the golden era of film songs that were melodious and lyrically beautiful. Kishore Kumar was and is my all-time favourite, but I also enjoyed listening to Mohd Rafi saab, Lata Mangeshkarji and Asha Bhosleji. Many western bands also influenced me.

How much do you enjoy performing live?

I love being on stage and enjoy every moment. The passion of mine has turned into something much bigger than I ever expected. I have a connection with Bollywood that can’t be explained, and that’s why I perform the way I do, from the heart with emotion.

How much are you looking forward to the Crazy For Kishore concert?

I’m really looking forward to the show. It’s extra special because Mr Suresh Kumar, the organiser, is equally passionate about Kishore. It’s a pleasure and honour to perform this tribute.

What do you think makes Kishore Kumar so special?

There will never be another Kishoreda. The way he adapted his voice to connect his vocals to any actor was simply amazing. He was not a trained vocalist, but sang from the heart. He could sound comical, romantic, emotional and powerful, and adapted his expressions and performance to whoever he lent his vocals to. I have yet to hear anyone come even close to his unique tone.

Which of his songs do you enjoy performing most?

Honestly, there are just so many hits I enjoy, I can’t choose. They include Roop Tera Mastna, Yeh Kya Hua, Om Shanti Om and Chingari Koi Bhadke, which always gets a great emotional response.

Why do you think he still remains so popular?

He was a genius in every aspect, be it his vocals, tone, expressive style of singing, which the generation during his time and even today want to follow. He was a very special vocalist and will always be popular.

What is the biggest lesson singers can learn from him?

Although not formally trained, he proved that a good performer will always sing from his heart. He actually brought life to every word he expressed. The biggest lesson singers today can learn is the way he delivered his words.

Why should we come to the Crazy for Kishore concert?

It is a tribute to Kishoreda. We have a great team of vocalists along with top UK band Strings performing. There is a fantastic line up of hits from the legend and a few surprises. Kishore fans will not be disappointed!

Why do you love music?

Music has a unique way of just making everything a lot better!
