Class 9 student in Delhi kills self after ‘sexual harassment’ in school

In yet another shocking incident that has gripped India's capital city of New Delhi, a 15-year-old student of a private school committed suicide after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by two of her teachers.

The student committed suicide at her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida on Tuesday evening. The teachers allegedly threatened to fail her in her examination, her parents told the media on Wednesday.

The student, belonging to a school in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, was found hanging from a ceiling fan. Although she was rushed to the hospital, she was brought dead by the doctors.

Police have booked the principal of the school as well as the two teachers.

“Based on the complaint received from the parents, we have booked two teachers of the victim girl’s school under sections 306, 506 and 354 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation and sexual harassment,” said Akhilesh Tripathi, the station house officer of Noida’s Sector 24 police station, was quoted as saying by HT.

“They have also been booked under Pocso act for sexual harassment of a minor. No arrest has been made yet as our investigation is going on,” Tripathi added.

The school, in the meantime, has denied allegations that teachers harassed the girl child.

“Such a thing has never happened,” the principal of the school said.

The girl was reportedly under extreme stress before she decided to take her life. “She used to tell us that her teachers want to fail her. She had also complained to me a month ago that her teachers touched her inappropriately,” her father said. “Her results were declared on March 16 where she received seven marks in social studies and failed for two marks in science. Which student gets seven marks in a subject? The teachers have intentionally forced my daughter to commit suicide by mentally and physically torturing her,” he added.

Flight delays and cancellations hit South and Central Asia amid India–Pakistan tensions

Travellers planning international or domestic journeys are being urged to brace for disruptions, as escalating tensions between India and Pakistan have led to widespread flight cancellations and rerouting across South and Central Asia.

The situation follows a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, two weeks ago, which killed 25 Indian civilians and a tourist from Nepal. In response, India launched a military operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, targeting sites in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on 7 May 2025. As a consequence, air travel in the region has been significantly affected.
