Bollywood films that have received a cult status, but were actually a flop at the box office

When it is expected that a film will do well, it sometimes, unfortunately, fails to make a mark at the box office and of course, sometimes it is vice-a-versa. There are many Bollywood films that have received a cult status. These cult movies are said to be one of the best films made in the history of Indian cinema. But well, not all good movies make a mark at the box office.

Today, let’s look at the list of cult movies that were a flop at the box office.

Mera Naam Joker

Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker is clearly one of the best films made in the history of Indian cinema. The movie was mounted on a huge budget, but unfortunately, it bombed at the box office. Though it was a flop movie, it received various awards including Filmfare Award for Best Director (Raj Kapoor).

Andaz Apna Apna

Salman Khan and Aamir Khan starrer Andaz Apna Apna released in the year 1994. The nok-jhok between Amar and Prem was the highlight of the film. Andaz Apna Apna is still loved by all the generations when it is screened on the small screen, but when the film released, it failed to make a mark at the box office. Salman has also said a couple of times that now people call it a cult film, but no one watched it when it released.

Silsila

Yash Chopra’s Silsila, which showcased a love triangle between Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha, was actually a flop at the box office. The movie spoke about extra-marital affair and infidelity and was said to be way ahead of its time. However, the movie has been given a cult status and songs of the film are still loved by people.

Agneepath

While Hrithik Roshan starrer Agneepath received a great response at the box office, the original Agneepath starring Amitabh Bachchan was a flop. Big B’s character Vijay Deenanath Chavan is one of the most famous characters played by the megastar and for his performance, he even won a National Award. So, it is surprising to know that the film didn’t do well at the box office.

Lamhe

Anil Kapoor and Sridevi starrer Lamhe is said to be one of the best romantic films made in Bollywood. The film showcased that age cannot be a barrier to fall in love with someone. While Lamhe did very well at the box office overseas, in India, the film underperformed. But well, it has received cult status and we can never forget the evergreen songs of the film.

Dil Se…

Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se… starring Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta released in 1998. The film received two National Awards and Manisha took home the Filmfare Best Actress trophy. The movie was also screened at many international film festivals. But when it released in India, it bombed at the box office. However, it received a good response overseas and how can we for the song Chaiya Chaiya from the film.
