6-year-old Rupsa declared Super Dancer Chapter 3 winner

Sony Entertainment Television has announced the winner of its highly popular kids dance reality show, Super Dancer Chapter 3. Launched with much fanfare in December, 2018, the show concluded on Sunday with 6-year old Rupsa Batabyal walking away with the trophy of the series winner.

Batabyal, who hails from Kolkata, West Bengal, also won a cash prize of ₹15 lakh, while her guru Nishant Bhat took home ₹ 5 lakh. They were handed the prize by three judges Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Geeta Kapur and Anurag Basu, as well as guest judges Alia Bhatt and Sonakshi Sinha. Four other finalists on the show included Saksham Sharma (7), Tejas Verma (9), Jaishree Gogoi (8) and Gourav Sarwan (12).

After winning the coveted trophy, Rupsa told media, “It feels really nice and I am very happy to have won the trophy of Super Dancer Chapter 3. I will continue dancing because I love it. I look forward to going home, to Kolkata, and celebrating with my entire family.”

Choreographer Nishant Bhat, who choreographed Rupsa on the show, calls her a gifted child and extremely hardworking. “I still remember, when I was paired with Rupsa, I was perplexed. She is only 6-year-old. So it proved to be a learning ground for me from becoming friends with her to identifying her strengths as a dancer, to working according to her moods, to building that chemistry together and many other things. It took time, but I am glad we could establish a bond. She doesn’t speak much, but her dancing does all the talking. She is a gifted child and extremely hardworking. I wish her the best in all that the future holds for her!”

Yash says Ravana in Ramayana must connect with Western viewers as film eyes global audience

Highlights

  • Yash says he humanised Ravana to help global audiences relate to the character.
  • Asura designs in the first glimpse drew criticism for looking too Western-inspired.
  • Producer Namit Malhotra compares the film's tone to Lord of the Rings and Gladiator.
Yash, who plays the demon king Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, says his portrayal was shaped by one clear goal: making the character relatable beyond Indian audiences.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, where the film was presented alongside major Hollywood releases, the actor said he worked to strip away the purely mythological reading of the role.

"I have tried to internalise the whole essence of Ravana and tried to make him as human as possible at times," Yash told Reuters.

"It is important for people to relate to him, and since we have global ambitions, we need to make it familiar to a Western audience as well."
