Robert Downey Jr. may have found a new way to keep Marvel fans guessing before Avengers: Doomsday arrives. Rather than relying on trailers or interviews, the actor has increasingly been using his clothes to surround his Doctor Doom comeback with hidden details.
The latest clue is a small patch on a jacket worn by Downey that reads “Boris”. On its own, the name would mean very little. But after weeks of speculation over a masked sorcerer reportedly connected to Doctor Doom, fans are now wondering whether Downey has quietly drawn attention to one of the film’s biggest secrets.
Marvel has officially confirmed Downey as Victor von Doom, the villain at the centre of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

This is not the first time Downey’s wardrobe has attracted attention.
At San Diego Comic-Con, fans decoded the runic writing on his Doctor Doom-themed jacket, with one section reportedly reading “there is no promise of tomorrow”. Another message was interpreted as “to the victor, go the spoils”, a detail that appeared especially appropriate given Doom’s real name, Victor von Doom.
That discovery turned a fashion choice into part of the Doomsday conversation. Fans began examining Downey’s appearances for possible references to the film, treating everything from his tailoring to accessories as potential clues.
His latest jacket has now restarted that speculation, with “Boris” standing out among a series of Marvel-themed patches.
Why “Boris” has suddenly become important
The name has significance because rumours surrounding Doomsday have linked Boris to a masked magical character working alongside Doctor Doom.
Speculation about Benedict Cumberbatch's involvement has circulated for months, with reports suggesting he could play Boris, a sorcerer and Doom’s sidekick rather than simply returning as the familiar Doctor Strange. One report described the character as a masked wizard equipped with a Sling Ring, while Marvel has not publicly confirmed Cumberbatch’s role.
More recent leaked images and fan discussions have pushed the theory further, with some viewers arguing that details on the masked character, including an opening on the forehead, could point to Strange and his third eye. Those claims remain unverified, and the leaked material has been heavily scrutinised because of questions around image quality and possible AI enhancement.
There is also a reason the name itself has caught attention. In Marvel Comics, Boris is an established figure in Doctor Doom’s world, traditionally serving as a trusted aide and caretaker to the Doom family. That makes the name plausible within the franchise even without connecting it to Strange.
The real mystery is whether Downey is teasing fans or simply having fun
The timing is what has made the patch particularly interesting to Marvel followers. Downey has already demonstrated that his clothing can contain deliberate Doomsday references, so another character-specific detail naturally invites closer inspection.
But there is still a large gap between a playful fashion reference and confirmation of a major plot twist.
Marvel’s official material confirms Downey’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom and has revealed an enormous ensemble including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal and the returning X-Men. It has not confirmed that Doctor Strange is serving Doom, that Boris is a codename for Strange or that the character's reported role follows the leaked storyline.
That uncertainty may be exactly what makes Downey’s wardrobe so effective. Each unexplained detail gives fans something to dissect without requiring Marvel to reveal anything officially.
And with Avengers: Doomsday still months away, Downey may have plenty more opportunities to turn an ordinary jacket, ring or accessory into the next piece of the puzzle.
