In a sharp reaction, India on Thursday slammed China's double standards as it once again blocked a move by the US to sanction Masood Azhar as 'global terrorist'.
Beijing used its veto power to block a resolution by the US to ban the Jaish-e-Mohammed chief.
All 15 nations, except China, have agreed for sanction against Masood Azhar.
“Deeply disappointed that once again, a single country blocked international consensus on designation of an acknowledged terrorist Masood Azhar,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
“India strongly believes that double standards and selective approaches will only undermine international community’s resolve to combat terrorism,” the statement read.
“Can only hope that there will be a realisation that accommodating with terrorism for narrow objectives both short sighted and counter-productive,” New Delhi said.
A veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, China has repeatedly blocked India's move to put a ban on the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief under the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the Council.
The JeM, founded by Azhar, has already been in the UN's list of banned terror outfits. China had in August extended by three months its technical hold on the the US, France and UK-backed proposal to list Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN after having blocked the move in February this year at the United Nations.
This is the second year in succession that China has blocked the resolution. Last year, China had done the same to stall India's application before the same Committee.
