Karan Johar locks the date to release his magnum opus Takht

Karan Johar has announced the release date of his much-awaited directorial offering Takht. On Saturday, the celebrated filmmaker took to his social media handles and dropped the teaser of his highly anticipated magnum-opus Takht, which also carried its release date. Starring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in principal roles, the historical drama is set to enter theatres on 24th December 2021.

The minute-long teaser of Takht showcases the royal throne placed in a dimly lit room, with a voiceover telling how the Mughals fought to win it. “Presenting Takht, produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar & Apoorva Mehta. Screenplay by Sumit Roy. Starring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Releasing Christmas, 24.12.2021,” wrote Johar.

Apart from announcing the official release date of the film, Karan Johar also revealed that the team is gearing up to begin principal photography in March. Recently, the filmmaker travelled across a couple of countries recceing locations for the historical drama. Apart from India, the movie will be shot in some other parts of the world as well.

Set in the 17th century Mughal India during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (1628–1658), Takht revolves around the succession war between Shah Jahan’s sons Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb who were the contenders of his throne. Reportedly, Ranveer Singh is playing the character of Dara Shikoh, while Vicky Kaushal has been signed on to play Aurangzeb.

Takht marks Karan Johar’s first attempt at directing a war period drama. He is mostly known for helming relationship dramas like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). With Takht, he is returning to direction after a gap of four years. His last film was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.
