- David Harbour has sparked a major Avengers: Doomsday theory with one unexpected line
- The actor appeared to reveal a line from the film involving Tony Stark
- Fans are now questioning whether Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom connection to Stark is more complicated than Marvel has revealed
Marvel fans thought they had a fairly clear idea of Robert Downey Jr’s return to the MCU. Then David Harbour seemingly threw the entire theory into chaos with four words.
Harbour, who reprises his role as Red Guardian in Avengers: Doomsday, was asked by Variety to give a line from the upcoming Marvel film completely out of context. His answer, delivered in his character’s Russian accent, was: “You ... are Tony Stark.”
The seemingly simple line has sent fans into overdrive because Downey is not supposed to be returning as Tony Stark. Marvel has repeatedly presented his Doomsday character as Victor von Doom, the iconic Fantastic Four villain.
So why would Harbour’s character tell someone they are Tony Stark?
Did David Harbour just leak Marvel’s biggest twist?
The comment could be nothing more than Harbour trolling fans. After all, Marvel actors are notoriously careful about revealing details from upcoming films, and a deliberately misleading line would be an easy way to send the internet into a frenzy.
But the timing has made the comment particularly intriguing.
Downey's return to the MCU was announced as a major twist in itself. Rather than bringing him back as Iron Man, Marvel revealed that he would play Victor von Doom. The studio has since leaned heavily into Doom as a separate character, including in the latest footage released around D23.
That has left fans wondering whether there is more to the casting than Marvel has admitted.
Why Tony Stark is suddenly back in the conversation
The biggest question is whether Harbour's line means Tony Stark actually appears in Doomsday, or whether someone simply mistakes Doom for Stark.
The multiverse gives Marvel plenty of room to play with that idea. The upcoming film brings together characters from different universes, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men, creating an obvious opportunity for alternate versions of familiar characters.
Another possibility is that Doom himself is at the centre of the mystery.
Downey is famously associated with Tony Stark after playing the character throughout the MCU's Infinity Saga. Marvel has now placed that same face behind Doom's mask, making the resemblance impossible for audiences to ignore.
Recent footage has only fuelled the speculation. Fans have scrutinised Doom's appearance, including differences in his costume and the colour of the eyes visible beneath the mask, leading to theories that more than one version of the character could appear.
Marvel may be trolling everyone
There is also a much simpler explanation: Harbour could be playing with the audience.
His line does not necessarily confirm that Tony Stark is alive, that Downey is secretly playing Stark again or that Doom is a variant of Iron Man.
In fact, “You are Tony Stark” could be exactly the kind of deliberately cryptic line Marvel would allow an actor to reveal because it sounds explosive while giving away almost nothing.
That would also fit the studio's approach to Doomsday, which has kept Downey's Doom at the centre of the mystery while carefully avoiding explaining why he looks exactly like one of the MCU's most recognisable heroes.
For now, Marvel has not confirmed that Tony Stark is returning. What Harbour has done, however, is turn a single line into one of the biggest Doomsday theories yet.
And with Avengers: Doomsday due in cinemas on December 18, 2026, fans have plenty of time to dissect every frame before they find out whether Harbour accidentally revealed the truth or simply had a little fun at Marvel's expense.
