Jackky Bhagnani bags KriArj Entertainment’s Anandwaa

One of the rapidly emerging film studios in Bollywood, KriArj Entertainment currently has around half a dozen projects on its platter, including Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran, Pari, Padman, Fanne Khan, Kedarnath and Batti Gul Meter Chalu. Despite having so many films at various stages of production, the studio is not keeping calm and has decided to invest in many more projects, one of them being a satire film titled Anandwaa.

The film revolves around a man who decides to handle a life-changing situation with humour rather than dejection. The studio has roped in Jackky Bhagnani to play the male lead in the movie. The actor was last seen in the 2015 film Welcome 2 Karachi.

Talking about why she cast Jackky in the film, producer Prernaa Arora says, "Jackky was our first choice because we felt he would be able to portray the role of Anandwaa to perfection. There is a sensitivity required with the right comic timing which Jackky is very good at. He is someone I have believed in from day one and he is very hard working. We are very excited about this project and the film goes on the floors early 2018."

Anandwaa will be directed by Abir Sengupta, who is known for his debut Bengali film Jomer Raja Dilo Bor. The director says that he has written this script as homage to Rajesh Khanna’s unforgettable film, Anand. "I have written this script as a homage to the cult classic Anand and it's in no way a remake. It's about the journey of a common man Anandwaa who learns to make the most of his life after dealing with a life-altering situation," he says.

Anandwaa will go on floors in February 2018. The whole film will be shot in Mumbai.

You arrive in Kochi, and it feels like the sea air makes everything slightly sharper; faces in the city look purposeful, a film poster peels at the corner of a wall. In a city that has cradled a thriving film industry for decades, a single crime on the night of 17 February 2017 ruptured the ordinary: an abduction, a recorded sexual assault and a survivor who reported it the next day. What happened next is every woman’s unspoken nightmare, weaponised into brutal reality. It was a public unpeeling of an industry’s power structures, a slow-motion fight over evidence and testimony, and a national debate about how institutions protect (or fail) women.

For over eight years, her fight for justice became a mirror held up to an entire industry and a society. It was a journey from the dark confines of that car to the glaring lights of a courtroom, from being a silenced victim to becoming a defiant survivor whose voice sparked a revolution. This is not just the story of a crime. It is the story of what happens when one woman says, "Enough," and the tremors that follow.
