Ethnic minority students prefer undergraduate and postgraduate courses

MORE students from ethnic minority backgrounds were studying for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency showed.

In total, 28 per cent of UK students were from ethnic minority backgrounds during last academic year, The Times said.


Students from ethnic minority backgrounds on master’s programmes rose to 27 per cent, compared to 24 per cent from the previous year.

There were 23 per cent of ethnic minority students in postgraduate research programmes, such as PhD studies, which is also a rise of four per cent.

Among other data, almost a third of all students are studying business or medicine-related subjects.

The number of students studying business and management grew by 15 per cent, and the number studying subjects related to medicine — including nursing and pharmacy — increased by 15 per cent.

Subjects like psychology and law were popular among students, with each subject seeing an increase in take-up by more than 12 per cent.
