Driver rolls Mercedes after hitting 90mph trying to escape police

WEST MIDLANDS Police has released footage showing the moment a driver overturned his Mercedes after leading officials on a chase through central Birmingham.

The video shows the car driven by Jamil Khan of Rood End Road, Smethwick, hitting another vehicle before his overturns and slides down the road on its roof.

Khan was caught on the camera of an unmarked police car before his vehicle overturned. Although he was briefly stopped, Khan sped off before police officials could approach him.

He went through a red light and at one time hit 90mph in a 30mph zone. The chase came to an end when Khan's vehicle collided with a Fiesta.

Khan was not wearing a seatbelt and he had to be cut free from the car by emergency services. He was immediately taken to the hospital to be treated for head injuries.

Although Khan smelled strongly of alcohol, he refused to be allow a blood sample to be analysed.

Khan was found guilty of dangerous driving, failing to allow a sample to be analysed and driving while disqualified. He was jailed for 26 months and banned from driving for four years at Birmingham Crown Court last Tuesday (13).

PC Dan Lynas, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was appalling driving from Khan, who was lucky to escape from the collision that he caused with his life.

“We welcome this sentence passed and hope it sends a strong message to drivers who are willing to put lives at risk by driving dangerously.”
