Adani, US firm to build data centre infrastructure in India

INDIA’S Adani Group today (29) said it is partnering with San Francisco-based Digital Realty to accelerate its foray into the data centre domain.

The deal will enable both companies to develop and operate data centre infrastructure across India.

According to a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the two companies will jointly evaluate developing and operating data centres, data centre parks, and cultivate undersea cable provider communities of interest across India.

The collaboration would leverage Digital Realty’s extensive experience and industry-leading solutions for their global data centre customer base.

India’s current data centre capacity is severely under-served, and the partnership between Adani and Digital Realty is looking to reshape this sector, Adani Group said in a statement.

Speaking on the development, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said: “Data centre infrastructure is critical to enable a Digital India, and this partnership leverages several of the capabilities developed by the Adani Group in power generation, transmission, retail electricity distribution, access to waterfronts through the ports business, and real estate management.

“Also, as one of the top five renewable energy companies in the world, our ability to power our data centres with solar and wind energy is unique, and addresses some of the challenges of building and operating data centres.

“We are excited about partnering with Digital Realty, the world’s market leader in the data centre industry, to help with the transformation of this sector in India.”

With the exceptionally strong growth of India’s data economy, building up its data centre infrastructure will be a critical need for the country’s digital enablement vision.

Vodafone has a new largest shareholder after French telecoms billionaire Xavier Niel bought a 16 per cent stake worth £4.4 billion, a move that could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the telecoms group as it pushes ahead with a major restructuring.

The Vodafone shareholder change follows the decision by Emirati telecoms company e& to sell its entire holding at 112.5p a share, ending an investment it first made in 2022. Niel purchased the stake through his family investment vehicle, Vega, paying a 15 per cent premium to Vodafone's closing share price on Thursday.
