Wrestling slams into Pakistan

FOLLOWING the success of Pakistan’s first International wrestling event across three cities, the country’s official professional wrestling promoters, the Ring of Pakistan, has announced the launch of Ring of Pakistan Season 2k18.

Over 20 international wrestlers from around the world are expected to be in attendance including Tiny Iron, Cyanide, Tango Tim Wylie and former WWE superstars Chris Masters and Tom La Ruffa.

American performing artist Jonny Loquato will host the event.

Founded with the aim of promoting professional wrestling in Pakistan and using the sport as an accelerator for encouraging peace, Ring of Pakistan represents an international-level platform for wrestling fans and athletes alike. Ring of Pakistan’s multi-fold vision is to promote professional wrestling in Pakistan, to provide a platform to local athletes and enhance its international image and reputation.

Last year’s inaugural event saw more than 20 wrestlers come to Pakistan, including former WWE superstars Wade Barrett, and Carlito. This year Ring of Pakistan Season 2k18 has two shows over the course of a week in December. The first event takes place at the KMC Sports Complex, Karachi, on December, 7, while the second show is at the Alhamra Cultural Complex, Gaddafi, Lahore, on December 9.

Ring of Pakistan Season 2k18 will be the biggest sports entertainment event to be held in the history of Pakistan. Ring of Pakistan is using professional wrestling as a means of highlighting modern Pakistan’s status as a peaceful and sports loving nation to the rest of the world. The event is a symbol of community cohesion and promotes peace and harmony within the country through sport. With opportunities and entertainment for young people lacking within Pakistan, particularly within deprived areas such as the tribal belt, they have previously been vulnerable to exploitation and radicalisation.

Speaking about the Ring of Pakistan, director Imran Shah (above), said: “We are very excited about the Ring of Pakistan hosting another international wrestling event.

“After the success of our inaugural event, it is clear there is a huge appetite for professional wrestling within Pakistan, and we look forward to expanding this platform even further with an event that is even bigger and better than the first.

“As the most watched live sport in the world, we believe that professional wrestling is a uniquely powerful sport that can help to bring the nation together, and project the image of a sports-loving Pakistan around the world.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas on backing 'Born Hungry': "As an actor and as a producer, my hats are different"

Highlights

  • Priyanka backs Born Hungry because Simpson’s story moved her personally.
  • She hopes the film’s JioHotstar release helps him trace his roots.
  • Her production choices are shaped by her own experience entering the industry without support.

As an actor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is constantly trying to challenge herself but as a producer, she says she wants to back stories that move her personally, something that propelled her to back the documentary "Born Hungry" on celebrity chef Sash Simpson. The documentary, currently streaming on JioHotstar in India, traces the life of Simpson -- from being abandoned as a young boy in India to his adoption in Canada and his eventual success as a renowned chef. It is produced by Priyanka's banner Purple Pebble Pictures along with Barry Avrich's Melbar Entertainment Group. The actor, known for her extensive filmography in India and in the US, said she was moved by Sash Simpson's story. "As an actor and as a producer, my hats are kind of different. And my brain splits into two. I think as an actor, I'm constantly trying to challenge myself. I want to be able to see if I can navigate different genres and if I can do action, comedy, drama... I love challenging myself and that is why my acting career has had variety. "As a producer, I'm empathetic and our ethos is a lot around wanting to give opportunities to newer filmmakers or filmmakers that want to achieve something that they haven't been able to or are kind of hitting a wall somewhere. My production side kind of comes from what personally moves me," Priyanka told PTI in an interview from Los Angeles.
