Why Does Dubai Have Such a High Expat Population?

By: Admin Super

In recent years, Dubai has gained a reputation for attracting a huge number of expats from around the world. The 2019 population, as seen on Worldpopulationreview, contains a total of just 15% of residents who were born here. Of those who have come here from other countries, over 70% are originally from Asian countries.

In fact, the World Migration report from 2016 showed that Dubai was the most cosmopolitan city on the planet. At that time, an expat rate of 83% put it well ahead of Brussels (62%), Toronto (46%), and Auckland (39%). So, why do so many people decide to start a new life in the UAE?

Economic Reasons

The economic boom in Dubai shows no sign of slowing down. In the first six months of 2019, the GDP grew by 2.1%, according to the Dubai Statistics Center and as reported by Gulf News. This is despite the general sluggishness in global and regional economies. Among the strongest elements are retail, transportation, wholesale, and real estate.

Foreign workers don’t pay any taxes on their salaries here, giving them more spending power. Salaries tend to be on the high side here, so many foreigners are attracted by the combination of high wages absence of taxes. Yet, salary isn’t the only important factor to take into account when deciding whether to move to Dubai.

Lifestyle and Investment Opportunities

This city has gained a strong reputation in recent years as one of the world’s most exciting places to visit or to live in. With giant new developments, some of the best restaurants to be found anywhere, and plenty of places to go out shopping, this is the ideal location for someone who wants an action-packed lifestyle.

As well as eating out in stunning restaurants and visiting huge malls such as Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, there are many other ways to pass leisure time here. For example, the historic Old Town is filled with beautiful buildings, art, and culture. This makes for a fascinating contrast with the modern developments nearby.

Investment opportunities also provide a good reason for sampling life in the UAE. The high levels of demand for properties have led to a buoyant real-estate investment market. This can be seen on the Bayut website, which is described at UAE’s largest property portal. This site receives close to 3 million visits on a monthly basis and has listings from around 1,200 agencies.

Career Progression Opportunities

It is worth looking more deeply at the main reasons given by expats for working in Dubai. According to research by CatererGlobal, the main reason that people take a hospitality sector job in the Middle East is for career progression and opportunities (52%). This compares to just 7.5% who rate salary as being the most important.

The chance to work for luxury brands in iconic buildings is certainly tempting. A spell working in Dubai can act as a great way to boost any career, regardless of whether the person stays here in the long term or moves away after a few years.
