SS Rajamouli’s RRR among Variety’s Oscars Best Film prediction

With Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion, filmmaker SS Rajamouli shot to overnight fame and his latest directorial RRR has established him as one of the most popular filmmakers in the world.

Starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan in lead roles, RRR is touted as one of the biggest Indian films ever made. Apart from wooing audiences in India, the epic action drama has won the hearts of the international audience as well, with its captivating performances, spell-binding visuals, and deft direction.

A number of writers, directors, and actors from Hollywood have heaped praises on the film ever since RRR started streaming on Netflix and reached a wider set of audience.

Recently, Variety magazine listed Jr NTR among its 2023 Oscars predictions for Best Actor. And now, international film critic Clayton Davis, who is the Senior Awards Editor at Variety, has said that he hopes the Film Federation of India chooses RRR over The Kashmir Files as an Oscars contender.

“The film RRR which is a three-hour action epic is the biggest film in India’s history. There is generally a lot of buzz at the moment because India is in the process of choosing a film to be selected to represent them at the Academy Award ceremony. RRR has lit up social media with its star Jr NTR, thirst traps, and visual effects,” Davis said in his web series The Take.

“The only hump to get over right now is that it’s in Telugu and all the Indian submissions typically are in Hindi,” he added.

The celebrated film critic also mentioned that even if India doesn’t choose RRR as its representative at the Academy Awards, voters in America must opt for it.

As soon as the official Twitter handle of Variety shared the video of the critic talking about RRR, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor re-shared it and wrote in the caption, “A proud moment excited and looking forward to the Oscar nomination…”

Water demand sparks questions around shoot logistics

The upcoming pan-Indian film Varanasi, directed by S. S. Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, has reportedly run into a logistical challenge ahead of a key shooting schedule. According to reports, the production team sought a substantial number of water tankers for an underwater sequence being prepared at a specially constructed set near Gaganpahad in Hyderabad.

It is claimed that around 150 tankers, each carrying 10,000 litres, were requested from the city’s water authorities. However, the request was reportedly turned down due to ongoing summer shortages and increasing demand for drinking water across Hyderabad. There has been no official confirmation from the makers, though the reports have circulated widely online.
