PRIYANKA MAKES STYLE STATEMENT AT MEGHAN’S WEDDING

SHE may have been there only as a guest, but Priyanka Chopra’s sense of style captured the attention of millions at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in Windsor last Saturday (19).

Amal Clooney – who wore a yellow Stella McCartney dress – and Priyanka were widely considered the best dressed among all the famous guests at the most high-profile wedding of the year.

The Indian actress looked elegant in a chic lilac Vivienne Westwood creation made specifically for her and a Philip Treacy wide-brimmed hat.

Straight after the wedding ceremony, she attended the daytime gathering as part of the 600 guests who were hosted by the Queen at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle.

A close friend of the bride, Priyanka was also on a select guest list of 200 people invited to the evening reception at Frogmore House. She ramped up the temperature further in a sizzling hot Dior gown, which proved to be so popular that my tweet about it was retweeted over 2,500 times and liked by more than 16,000 on Twitter.

One royal commentator, who was suitably impressed with Priyanka’s outfit choices, summed it up best when she joked, “Is it even legal to look this good as a guest at your friend’s wedding?”

The actress paid this touching tribute to Meghan after the moving wedding ceremony at St George’s Chapel. “Every once in a while there is a moment when time stands still, that happened today. You, my friend, were the epitome of grace, love and beauty. Every choice made at this wedding by you both will go down in history, not just because it was your wedding, but because this incredible wedding stood for change and hope. Both things that the world needs desperately.

“Thank you for being the perfect picture of all things good. Seeing your union and love blessed in front of my eyes made me so happy and tear up! I wish you both love happiness and togetherness always.”

Priyanka has been friends with Meghan for nearly four years and had heaped praise on her in the lead up to the wedding, saying that the new Duchess of Sussex was born to be a global influencer and she was looking forward to Meghan performing philanthropic duties globally as a member of the royal family.

Also, when Priyanka does finally tie the knot, she is almost certainly guaranteed a royal guest.

When protest becomes a pogrom: The Home Office must draw a clearer line

IT TOOK three nights of violence in Thetford, Norfolk for the police to restore order. A crowd chanted “get them out” and “deport, deport, deport” as they pelted a house with eggs and smashed the windows. Several dozen people tried to break down the door, hoping to confront the people inside, violently attacking the police who blocked them.

This violent criminality was not political protest, but an attempt at a xenophobic pogrom to drive out asylum seekers housed in the property. The police relocated them elsewhere for their own safety. That felt like ‘mission accomplished’ for the angry crowd. Online, extremists suggested other places could target asylum seekers’ homes to emulate Thetford’s success. Disorder in Belfast and Epping had seen a crime, committed by an asylum seeker, used to mobilise collective punishment against migrants and other ethnic minorities. Nobody involved in the Thetford disorder suggested those in the house targeted had caused any trouble. The mere presence of asylum seekers in the town was perceived as a threat – from “illegals” or “invaders”.
