Musical version of Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding premieres in Doha

The musical version of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair’s 2001 hit comedy-drama Monsoon Wedding premiered in Doha as part of Qatar Creates’ cultural programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and beyond.

Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar Creates Events, which is presenting the show, had earlier said, “Monsoon Wedding is a story that inspires debate about the nature of life, identity, and our place within an ever-changing world.”

As per reports, shows of the film will run every day until November 27 with two additional shows on 23rd and 26th at Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre, Souq Waqif.

Talking about the film, Mira Nair said, “This is a celebration of family, laughter, joy, and also of silence and the other side of life. And it is (a story of a) family which is such a universal force in all of our lives.”

Sharing her excitement over the fact that Qatar is hosting the world premiere of her musical, she added, “I love to be in Qatar today because this is a culture and home of many cultures and so is our musical Monsoon Wedding where people have crossed borders, crossed countries to find love, so thank you for this invitation.”

She continued, “In the beautiful collision that is Monsoon Wedding, the bride and the groom meet across oceans, both having their own vision of India and America. At its core, our story is about love. I think of the musical as imbuing four kinds of love: what I call “old shoe love” – the neglected love between the father and mother of the bride that is rekindled again; the love that is arranged but could ignite – the love between the groom and the bride; the nonmaterial, pure love over a flower – of Alice and Dubey, the maid and the tent man. And unfortunately, the twisted love that has never been love at all but has afflicted so many lives,” she said.

The red carpet for the premiere saw the attendance of the original cast of Monsoon Wedding, including Lillete Dubey and Tillotama Shom. Acclaimed actress Tabu and noted music composer and director Vishal Bhardwaj were also present at the premiere.

2025 Oscars: Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, and A-List stars set to present

The Academy has unveiled a star-studded line-up of presenters for the 2025 Oscars, adding even more glamour to Hollywood’s biggest night. Joining the previously announced 2024 winners—Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Robert Downey Jr.—are A-listers like Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Whoopi Goldberg, and Amy Poehler.

Comedian Conan O’Brien will host the event, marking his first time leading the prestigious awards show. The telecast is expected to acknowledge the impact of the devastating wildfires that hit Los Angeles earlier this year. O’Brien has stated that he wants the show to strike a balance between honouring Hollywood’s biggest achievements and recognising the challenges the city has faced.

A new twist on the Oscars' “Fab 5” format will also be introduced this year. Traditionally, past winners present acting awards while sharing personal tributes about the nominees. However, due to controversy surrounding one of this year’s nominees, the format has been adjusted to spotlight behind-the-scenes talent instead.

The new presenters include Elle Fanning, John Lithgow, June Squibb, and Bowen Yang, adding a mix of Hollywood veterans and fresh faces to the stage. While the specific categories they’ll present remain under wraps, tradition suggests last year’s Best Actor winner, Cillian Murphy, will hand out the Best Actress award, and Emma Stone will return the favour for Best Actor.

Rumours are swirling about a potential opening performance by Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both nominated for their roles in the highly anticipated musical. While Grande remained coy about the possibility, fans are already buzzing with excitement.

The Oscars will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu, with a red-carpet pre-show kicking off at 6:30 p.m. ET. As the countdown begins, the Academy promises more surprises and announcements in the coming weeks.

With a mix of Hollywood royalty, heartfelt tributes, and a touch of Conan O’Brien’s signature humour, the 2025 Oscars are shaping up to be a night to remember.
