Mrunal Thakur on making a crossover from TV to films

Mrunal Thakur is perhaps in the best phase of her career. She has seen the release of her three films in the past three months and has garnered praises for her performance in each one of them.

For the unversed, Mrunal Thakur began her acting career with television show Mujhse Kuchh Kehti... Hai Khamoshiyaan and became a household name after playing an important character in Ekta Kapoor’s hit soap opera Kumkum Bhagya.

Surprising everyone, Mrunal quit Kumkum Bhagya midway and decided to pursue acting in Bollywood. As good luck would have it, the actress bagged bilingual film Love Sonia (2019) which brought her a lot of critical acclaim.

She followed Love Sonia with biographical drama Super 30 (2019) where she got to work with superstar Hrithik Roshan. Her second film Batla House (2019) opposite John Abraham also turned out to be a hit and is still running successfully in cinemas.

In a recent interview, the actress opened up about her journey and said, “This journey has taken me seven years. It has not been quick and every single day, I have dreamt of this. I had already shot for Love Sonia and Super 30 but their release was delayed. And that’s why all these three films have come out in such a short period of time.”

Talking about her transition from television to Bollywood, the actress said, “On TV, it actually gets easy because you play the same character over two-three years. In films, it becomes difficult as you have to impress audiences with different characters and whatever screen space you get. For me, it was a do or die situation. The transition was difficult but not impossible. I have to thank filmmakers who are taking chances with TV actors and there is no stereotype. Now, they just cast the actor and the medium doesn’t matter,” she concluded.

  • Film sets Shakespeare inside a wealthy British South Asian family
  • Directed by Aneil Karia and in cinemas 6 February 2025
  • Cast includes Morfydd Clark, Joe Alwyn, Sheeba Chadha and Art Malik

Riz Ahmed has entered Hamlet in a way British cinema has not quite seen. The new Hamlet trailer has been released by Universal, giving the first proper look at Aneil Karia’s modern take on Shakespeare and placing the story inside a British South Asian business empire. It is due in cinemas on 6 February, and the footage shows a tense, controlled Ahmed moving through grief, suspicion and family power.

The film teams Ahmed and Karia again after The Long Goodbye, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. That success informs this production. This is the first time a major UK studio release has grounded Hamlet within a South Asian household for a wide audience.
