The internet has brought about a myriad of ways to meet potential partners and has allowed even the shiest of people to find their soulmates. In 2013, it was found that 1 in 5 relationships start online. With the mobile market growing and dating apps becoming more abundant in the years since then, this number has increased. But are people beginning to become disillusioned with apps like Tinder which put a heavy emphasis on physical appearance? There do appear to be newer and better ways to meet people online, which could soon replace these traditional dating apps.

When swiping through hundreds of faces on Tinder, users have to match in terms of physical attraction before they can begin talking to one another. This is seen by many as a shallow form of finding a partner, and it can often lead people to feel insecure about themselves. If someone wants to find a potential soulmate rather than a person they simply find enjoyable to look at, it would arguably be better to begin talking and getting to know someone before actually seeing what they look like. There are various sites now which are giving users the opportunity to meet people using this method.

The growing online bingo scene is one place which gives users a platform for socialising and meeting people online through text chat. Bingo has always been associated with being a highly social pastime, and since it has been transported to the internet it has attracted a much more diverse range of players. Indeed, millennials of all sexes have been found to engage with online bingo. The list of trusted bingo sites is growing, with options like Ted Bingo opting for a gender-neutral design scheme to attract all users. While playing games, users can chat with each other. If they hit it off, they can then arrange to take things further and meet up in person.

This kind of dating has been going on for a while in games like World of Warcraft. In the game, everybody has their own avatar which usually bears no resemblance to their real-world appearance. Still, thousands of people have managed to find partners as well as friends for life in the sprawling MMORPG. Virtual reality is likely to take this way of meeting people one step further, and VR chat rooms could play a huge part in the future of dating. In these chat rooms, it is also conceivable that users could appear in them as an avatar. They would then have the chance to get to know people and develop a bond before being concerned with physical appearance.

It seems fair to say that dating sites that require users to initially judge people on how they look could be on the way out. Thanks to the online gaming scene, there are plenty of ways that people can get socialising with others without having to match them on the basis of attraction first. By getting to know people in this way, there is a chance that daters can develop a deeper connection.
