Chhapaak’s first schedule ends

After relishing her spellbinding performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat (2018), cinephiles are waiting to see actress Deepika Padukone in her next film Chhapaak with bated breath.

Chhapaak, directed by great storyteller Meghna Gulzar, started rolling on 20th March, 2019. The latest update on the hotly anticipated project is that Deepika has completed the first schedule of the film in Delhi and is back to Mumbai.

The movie is based on the life of acid attack survivor and activist Laxmi Agarwal. Apart from playing the central character in it, Deepika Padukone is co-producing the film as well. It will mark her debut as a producer. Fox Star Studios is the co-producer on the project with the actress.

Talking about the release date of the film, Chhapaak will roll into cinemas on 10th January, 2020. The movie is set to clash with superstar Ajay Devgn’s ambitious period drama, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which is also slated to hit the marquee on the same date.

It will be interesting to see which film works better with the audience. However, it should not come as a surprise if both films go on to do good business at the box-office because Ajay and Deepika both actors have a huge fanbase. Besides, there are multiple examples where two well-made films released on the same date performed really well at the cash counter and emerged as successful ventures.

Highlights

  • Asura designs in the first glimpse drew criticism for looking too Western-inspired.
  • Producer Namit Malhotra compares the film's tone to Lord of the Rings and Gladiator.
Yash, who plays the demon king Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, says his portrayal was shaped by one clear goal: making the character relatable beyond Indian audiences.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, where the film was presented alongside major Hollywood releases, the actor said he worked to strip away the purely mythological reading of the role.

"I have tried to internalise the whole essence of Ravana and tried to make him as human as possible at times," Yash told Reuters.

"It is important for people to relate to him, and since we have global ambitions, we need to make it familiar to a Western audience as well."
