Breast cancer survivor scales Everest to raise awareness

A BREAST CANCER survivor has successfully climbed Mount Everest in aid of a charity raising awareness of the disease.

Yasmin Haque, 56, joined 31 other charity supporters in November to climb the mountain over the course of 12 days. She has raised £8,425 for charity Prevent Breast Cancer.

Haque, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, said she thought it was “particularly important” for the Asian community to be more aware of breast cancer.

“There are still so many cultural taboos around it,” she said.

Describing the trek as one of the “toughest things she has ever done”, Haque said it was a “life-changing experience” and expressed delight at being able to raise money for the charity.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with 1 in 9 women and 1 in 1,000 men developing the disease in their lifetime.

Indian American Vivek Ramaswamy wins Ohio governor primary

INDIAN AMERICAN Vivek Ramaswamy, a multimillionaire former biotech executive and erstwhile presidential hopeful, won the Republican primary for governor of Ohio on Tuesday (5) and now faces a November general election contest against Democrat Amy Acton, a physician and former director of the Ohio Department of Health.

The Midwestern state last elected a Democratic governor in 2006, but is the site of a highly competitive US Senate race in this year's midterm elections, which could also put the governorship into play.
