Taapsee Pannu upset over being dropped from a film without intimation

Just a few days ago, we reported that the makers at B.R. Studios are set to remake one of their blockbuster films Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978). While the original movie was directed by legendary B.R. Chopra, the directorial responsibilities for its modern version have been given to filmmaker Mudassar Aziz.

Talking about the star cast of the film, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018) fame Kartik Aaryan is locked to play the male lead, while newcomer Ananya Panday, who will make her acting debut with Dharma Productions’ Student Of The Year 2, is rumoured to have signed the project to essay one of the two female leads.

Though the remake is yet to begin production, it has already quoted a controversy. Reportedly, before finalizing Ananya Panday for the lead role, the makers had approached talented actress Taapsee Pannu for the same role and the actress had even said yes to star in the flick. But now, Pannu is mighty pissed at the makers for replacing her without even caring to inform her about the same.

“I was at the narration in November, in the presence of Juno and Abhay (producers). I liked the script and gave it the go-ahead. I was asked to clear my schedule and I complied. Only the clauses remained to be negotiated. But they suddenly vanished,” complains miffed Taapsee.

The actress goes on to add, “I just wish I had known this a little earlier because I would have cleared my schedule. I had taken away dates from another film to accommodate the remake. I did it because I was keen on doing the film as Mudassar has contemporised the original story,” she says.

Taapsee Pannu will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan. The film is produced by Shah Rukh Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment.

From Anupama Parameswaran to Samantha Ruth Prabhu: Why the sexist ‘climber’ label follows women who date successful men

Highlights

  • Successful actresses are often accused of choosing relationships for money or status
  • The ‘gold digger’ and ‘climber’ labels can erase women’s own careers and financial independence
  • Anupama Parameswaran, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Sushmita Sen and Malaika Arora have all faced versions of the same narrative
  • Their responses show how female stars are increasingly refusing to accept the assumption that a relationship must have a financial motive

When a successful woman is linked to a wealthier or more powerful man, the question is often not whether she is happy, in love or making an independent choice. Instead, the conversation quickly turns to what she might gain from the relationship.

That is where the word ‘climber’ becomes revealing. It suggests that a woman is using a relationship to move upwards socially, financially or professionally, reducing a personal choice to a calculated transaction. In Indian celebrity culture, the label often appears alongside accusations of being a ‘gold digger’, particularly when a relationship ends.
