THE LABOUR Party has suspended MP Mike Amesbury following the release of footage showing him allegedly striking a man to the ground and continuing the attack.

The video, published by Mail Online, prompted the party to take action late on Sunday, saying Amesbury would be suspended "pending an investigation."

The footage appears to show the 55-year-old MP, who represents the Runcorn and Helsby constituency in northwest England, repeatedly hitting another man as bystanders can be heard shouting, “Stop it.”

Police have confirmed that a 55-year-old man voluntarily attended an interview under caution about the incident, which occurred early Saturday.

Cheshire Police stated that officers had responded to reports of an assault in Frodsham and that “further inquiries” were underway.

A Labour Party spokesperson said Amesbury had been cooperating with police and that “the Labour Party has administratively suspended Amesbury's membership... pending an investigation.”

In a statement, Amesbury acknowledged the incident and said he would “co-operate with any inquiries,” while affirming his commitment to being “an open and accessible MP” for his community.

Amesbury added that he had felt threatened during the evening and had “contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened.”

He declined further public comment but assured his cooperation with police if needed.

In a previous incident last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking Amesbury at his office in Frodsham, with prosecutors noting the man had been observed staring through the office glass and questioning security measures.
