EYE SPY – BOLLYWOOD GOSSIP WITH ASJAD NAZIR

PRIYANKA HAS A STARRY DIWALI IN AMERICA

Priyanka Chopra didn’t let being away from India during Diwali dampen her spirits and spent time with her Hollywood buddies, including Fergie, Kate Hudson, Whitney Wolfe Herd and Karlie Kloss at the launch event of a new app in New York, which she was co-hosting. Talking of Priyanka she recently wrapped Quantico season 3, which premieres in January 2018. She has also shot supporting roles for Hollywood movies A Kid Like Jake and Isn’t It Romantic, which both release in 2018.

DUTT’S DAUGHTER

BELIEVE it or not, this is actor Sanjay Dutt’s daughter Trishala Dutt, by his first wife. The New York-based beauty is regularly turning heads with eye-catching photos like this on social media and is getting herself a big following online. Trishala apparently wants to follow her father’s footsteps into acting, but he doesn’t want her to.

YOUR OWN WAY

I RECENTLY spoke to Vidya Balan in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The acclaimed actress told me she has always walked away from situations that have made her feel uncomfortable and urged younger actresses to do the same. “There isn’t just one way to succeed. Anyone who tells you otherwise and says this is the only way to do it are bullsh*tting you, so don’t believe them. There is no substitute for talent or merit and there is no one single road, so you can create your own path and get ahead,” said Vidya.

KAT’S DOWNED

WHEN Katrina Kaif starred alongside Aamir Khan in hit film Dhoom 3 there were stories some of her scenes had been cut and her character given less importance.

It looks like she will get sidelined in their hotly anticipated next film Thugs Of Hindostan, which releases Diwali 2018. Aamir Khan recently revealed the action adventure set in 1790 revolves around Fatima Sana Shaikh and that Katrina doesn’t have a lead role in it. I am sure Aamir playing down Katrina’s role won’t go down too well with her.

DRAKE FOLLOWER

SHE may only have acted in two films, but Bollywood newcomer Athiya Shetty has got herself a high profile admirer in Drake. The Canadian pop superstar, who has 38 million followers on Instagram, follows the Indian actress on the social media site and recently liked a stunning photo of her. Athiya herself has 1.7 million followers and of course follows Drake back.

THE PLASTIC BREAK

IT IS no secret that Faryal Makhdoom feels broken by the collapse of her marriage to Amir Khan. Things got worse for Faryal, who is pregnant with the second child of her estranged husband, when it was reported he had been sending seedy texts to another woman. The British boxer is said to have sent messages to a teacher before bombarding her with late night phone calls. The messages included Amir accusing Faryal of being obsessed with plastic surgery.

A FAN’S LAST WISH

A MAGIC moment on social media saw Shah Rukh Khan’s fans get together to tell him about the plight of a fan with cancer named Aruna, whose last wish was to meet him.

The fans relentlessly trended the request on social media and their message reached the actor. Shah Rukh recorded a heartfelt video message for Aruna and promised to meet her at the earliest opportunity.

The big-hearted star also sent her positive messages for her recovery. But unfortunately, Aruna died before Shah Rukh could make her wish come true.

MEHSOPURIA ROCKS UP

ONE of my favourite songs of 2017 was Mehsopuria’s stunning comeback Hookaan. The British bhangra star said he was extremely pleased with the love for Hookaan and is hoping his brand new track Ranjha Jatt Jogi is another big banger. “

“The new single is produced by one of UK music’s unsung heroes, Tom Lowry of the legendary Planet Recording Studios. He’s brought a rock element and it sits perfectly with the vision I had for Ranjha Jatt Jogi. It’s very much a UK bhangra track, but one that will capture the hearts of the fans,” said Mehsopuria.

One year on, Starmer still has no story — but plenty of regrets

Do not expect any parties in Downing Street to celebrate the government’s first birthday on Friday (4). After a rocky year, prime minister Sir Keir Starmer had more than a few regrets when giving interviews about his first year in office.

He explained that he chose the wrong chief of staff. That his opening economic narrative was too gloomy. That choosing the winter fuel allowance as a symbol of fiscal responsibility backfired. Starmer ‘deeply regretted’ the speech he gave to launch his immigration white paper, from which only the phrase ‘island of strangers’ cut through. Can any previous political leader have been quite so self-critical of their own record in real time?

Comment: Can Starmer turn Windrush promises into policy?

Anniversaries can catalyse action. The government appointed the first Windrush Commissioner last week, shortly before Windrush Day, this year marking the 77th anniversary of the ship’s arrival in Britain.

The Windrush generation came to Britain believing what the law said – that they were British subjects, with equal rights in the mother country. But they were to discover a different reality – not just in the 1950s, but in this century too. It is five years since Wendy Williams proposed this external oversight in her review of the lessons of the Windrush scandal. The delay has damaged confidence in the compensation scheme. Williams’ proposal had been for a broader Migrants Commissioner role, since the change needed in Home Office culture went beyond the treatment of the Windrush generation itself.

Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh’s ‘Sapphire’ collaboration misses the mark

The song everyone is talking about this month is Sapphire – Ed Sheeran’s collaboration with Arijit Singh. But instead of a true duet, Arijit takes more of a backing role to the British pop superstar, which is a shame, considering he is the most followed artist on Spotify. The Indian superstar deserved a stronger presence on the otherwise catchy track. On the positive side, Sapphire may inspire more international artists to incorporate Indian elements into their music. But going forward, any major Indian names involved in global collaborations should insist on equal billing, rather than letting western stars ride on their popularity.

If ayatollahs fall, who will run Teheran next?

Portraits of Iranian military generals and nuclear scientists, killed in Israel’s last Friday (13) attack, are seen above a road, as heavy smoke rises from an oil refinery in southern Teheran hit in an overnight Israeli strike last Sunday (15)

If ayatollahs fall, who will run Teheran next?

THERE is one question to which none of us has the answer: if the ayatollahs are toppled, who will take over in Teheran?

I am surprised that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei, has lasted as long as he has. He is 86, and would achieve immortality as a “martyr” in the eyes of regime supporters if the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, succeeded in assassinating him. This was apparently Netanyahu’s plan, though he was apparently dissuaded by US president Donald Trump from going ahead with the killing.

Comment: Talking about race isn’t racist – ignoring it helped grooming gangs thrive

Comment: Talking about race isn’t racist – ignoring it helped grooming gangs thrive

WAS a national inquiry needed into so-called grooming gangs? Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer did not think so in January, but now accepts Dame Louise Casey’s recommendation to commission one.

The previous Conservative government – having held a seven-year national inquiry into child sexual abuse – started loudly championing a new national inquiry once it lost the power to call one. Casey explains why she changed her mind too after her four-month, rapid audit into actions taken and missed on group-based exploitation and abuse. A headline Casey theme is the ‘shying away’ from race.
