When the trailer of Sunny Kaushal and Rukshar Dhillon starrer Bhangra Paa Le was released, it impressed us a lot as in Bollywood we have rarely seen a dance-based film that celebrates an Indian dance form. However, we cannot ignore the fact that the trailer also reminded us of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal.

Bhangra Paa Le is set in two eras, 1944 and 2019. Jaggi (Sunny Kaushal) and Simi (Rukshar Dhillon), both are Bhangra dancers. They meet at a wedding and thanks to their passion for Bhangra the two connect quite well with each other. But they come to know that they are from rival colleges and soon the two are pitted against each other in a Bhangra dance competition. Along with this, we are shown the story of Kaptaan (Sunny) and Nimmo (Shriya Pilgaonkar) set in 1944. They also connect because of music and love blossoms between them.

First of all, we have to say that the story and the screenplay are very similar to Love Aaj Kal. Bhangra Paa Le is actually a Bhangra version of the Saif and Deepika starrer. But as the story and screenplay are similar to Love Aaj Kal, Sneha Taurani’s narration is fresh and impresses us. We also loved the cinematography done by Jitan Harmeet Singh.

Well, one of the biggest flaws in the film is that it has too many songs. We know that it’s a dance-based film but that doesn’t mean every 10 minutes there should be a song. In the first half, it actually happens that after every two scenes there’s a song. Also, in the climax when it’s Jaggi’s team vs Simi’s team, we can clearly see that the choreography of the latter’s team is shown weak so that our hero’s team wins the competition. We wonder why was that required.

Coming to performances, Sunny Kaushal has done a good job. He has danced very well, but he needs to work a bit more on his emotional sequences. Rukshar Dhillon is amazing in the film. She makes a confident debut and she is a great dancer. Shriya Pilgaonkar is superb in the movie. She shines whenever she appears on the big screen.

The music of the film is decent. The recreated versions of the song Bhangra Paa Le and Rangeela Re stand out. Well, it’s a dance-based film, and we have to say that the choreography is simply amazing.

Overall, Bhangra Paa Le offers nothing new when it comes to story, but if you love watching dance-based films you should watch it.

Ratings: 2.5/5
