Bareilly Ki Barfi becomes the sleeper hit no one expected!

With none of the new offerings performing well at Indian box office, the Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari directorial Bareilly Ki Barfi has once again won the weekend by putting up a great show at the ticket window. It pocketed around INR 5.20 crores over its second weekend in India.

Toplined by Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana in principal roles, the movie hit screens in India on 18th August and opened to decent occupancy across the country, especially in the Hindi speaking belt.

With the help of its rooted content, stellar performances and excellent word of mouth, the movie attracted a lot of audience to theatres and took its collection figures to an impressive INR 23.92 crores by the end of its second weekend at the box office.

The movie is still running strong in many theatres across the country and is expected to cross INR 25 crores mark today. Since the movie was made on a shoestring budget, these are very impressive figures for everybody associated with it.

Now it will be really interesting to see how far the film goes from here. However, two big films - Baadshaho and Shubh Mangal Savdhan - are coming up next week, which will definitely slow down its place.

Produced by Junglee Pictures and BR Studios, Bareilly Ki Barfi entered theatres on 18th August 2017.

Highlights:

  • Government to criminalise porn that shows strangulation or suffocation during sex.
  • Part of wider plan to fight violence against women and online harm.
  • Tech firms will be forced to block such content or face heavy Ofcom fines.
  • Experts say the ban responds to medical evidence and years of campaigning.

You see it everywhere now. In mainstream pornography, a man’s hands around a woman’s neck. It has become so common that for many, especially the young, it just seems like part of sex, a normal step. The UK government has decided it should not be, and soon, it will be a crime.

The plan is to make possessing or distributing pornographic material that shows sexual strangulation, often called ‘choking’, illegal. This is a specific amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill. Ministers are acting on the back of a stark, independent review. That report found this kind of violence is not just available online, but it is rampant. It has quietly, steadily, become normalised.
