Indian student dies after online date gone wrong

A 25-year-old Indian student was found dead at the home of a 19-year-old teenage girl he met through an online site.

Maulin Rathod, an accounting student, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night at a hospital in Sunbury, 42 km north-west of Melbourne, after he was found critically injured at the girl's house on Monday night.

Rathod was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but died overnight.

The girl was arrested at the scene.

She has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, but the charges could be upgraded to manslaughter or murder.

Rathod's friend Lovepreet Singh told 7News that he was an only child and had moved to Australia four years ago.

Rathod was pursuing his masters in accounting.

Rathod's parents were in shock to hear of his sudden death, said Singh.

"His parents are in shock," he said. "He was a very nice person, had a jolly nature and was a cricket lover. I loved to hang around him. He had a very humble personality and tried really hard with his studies," he said.
