Indian-American student wins International Geography Bee World Championship

Indian-American Avi Goel has won the International Geography Bee World Championship that was held in Berlin, Germany, last month.

The 14-year-old is a tenth grader at Silver Creek High School in Evergreen, San Jose, California. Avi won a gold medal in seven out of the 10 medal events and a silver medal in two of the events.


The competition took place from July 11-18, 2018, and more than 100 students across the globe participated.

"After these awards, I want to move on to progress in other subject areas such as math and computer science as these are my desired areas to study in college,” Avi told news agency Press Trust of India. “The lion's share of my rationale for winning such things stems back to personal pride and desire although I hope to use them, to some extent, to hopefully embellish my college applications if possible."

Avi's parents Komal and Rajiv said they are proud of his achievement, which was the result of hard work and dedication.

The competition featured exams, quiz rounds, and other formats that tested all aspects of geographic knowledge from historical geography, to physical geography and climatology, reported PTI.

Burnham would beat Starmer in Labour leadership vote, poll finds

ANDY BURNHAM would beat Keir Starmer in a head-to-head Labour leadership contest, according to a YouGov poll of party members, as the Greater Manchester mayor set out plans to move Labour to the left.

The survey found Burnham would win 59 per cent support against 37 per cent for Starmer. It also found Burnham would beat former health secretary Wes Streeting by 80 per cent to 10 per cent in a contest to replace the prime minister.
