COVID-19: 56 cases, six deaths in Bangladesh

BANGLADESH has reported two more COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 56.

The country has reported six deaths so far from the disease.

Meanwhile,a 70-year-old man died while in home quarantine in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.

He had been put in home quarantine for the last couple of days.

The sample of the deceased was collected this morning and sent to Institute of Public Health (IPH) to test for Covid-19, Dr Abdul Gaffar, civil surgeon of Lakshmipur said.

The old man fell ill after a neighbour, who returned from Saudi Arabia recently, visited him.

Two elderly male people are the latest ones who tested positive for COVID-19. The authorities are conducting investigation on how they got infected, reports said.

A total of 78 people are being kept in isolation currently. Samples from 141 persons were tested in the last 24 hours.

At least 1000 samples of suspected Covid-19 patients will be tested across the country by Friday (3) to assess the situation.

"As per the Prime Minister's directive that we received on Wednesday, samples of two suspected (Covid-19) patients from each upazila will be collected so that we can have at least 1,000 samples by today and test those by tomorrow," said MD Habibur Rahman, director of Management Information System at Directorate General of Health Services.

Health experts have been stressing the need for more tests to assess the situation as they fear the number of infected people could be higher as many carriers of the virus could be off the radar due to limited testing.

The country tested around 1,900 people from late January till April 2.
