Community pays tribute to man stabbed in Southall

A MAN has been charged with the murder of a Sikh man, Sukhjinder Singh, who was also known as Gurinder Singh, in Southall, last week.

Amandeep Sandhu, of Townsend Road, was charged last Sunday (7) with the murder of the 33-year-old construction worker.

The 29-year-old will appear in custody at Hendon Magistrates Court on Monday (August 8).

Family and friends of Singh, who was killed by stab wounds in Spikes Bridge Road on Saturday (July 30), gathered last Sunday (7) to pay tribute to a man who was much liked in the community.

Four other men, aged 24, 28, 29 and 36 respectively, have been arrested in connection with the murder and have been bailed to return to dates in mid to late September, pending further enquiries.

A post-mortem examination held at Uxbridge mortuary last Monday (1) August gave the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

Manjinder Sigh, a close friend of the deceased, told Eastern Eye he had known Singh for 16 years and recalled that they had played cricket together in Punjab, India.

“He was a good guy, a very helpful guy. Ready to help anyone. I’m looking after his brother ‘Rocky’ and his wife who are staying with me at the moment as they have come over from Holland.

“Everybody misses him. He played a very big part in my life; we worked together and lived together. Everyone is still in total shock,” said Manjinder Singh.

He also said he was convinced that the attack must have involved more than one person as Gurinder was “6 ft plus and a very healthy guy”.

Manjinder added that “there was too much crime in West London now,” referring to a number of recent stabbings in the area.

Another friend, Harry Chahal, told Eastern Eye that Gurinder “always helped everyone.

“He would always be there when you needed him and give you the support in hard and good times.”

Chahal, who had known Gurinder Singh for four years, said he and other friends organised a short march and gathering at Viking Road in Southall.

“We were all wearing t-shirts with his picture on in it to pay our respects. We lit candles. Showing unity, a lot of love and respect for our friend. It’s a proper shock that he has gone,” said Chahal.

Manjinder said the body will be flown back to India for a burial and that Gurinder’s other brother would be travelling over from his home in New Zealand.
