British tourist raped in Goa

A 48-year-old British female tourist was allegedly raped as she was walking to her hotel from a railway station in Goa on Thursday (20), a police official said.

She was also robbed of her belongings by the man who fled after committing the crime. He has since been arrested thanks to CCTV footage from the station.

"The incident took place at 4 am local time (22:30 GMT) in Canacona town. The woman complained to the police that while she was walking from the Canacona railway station towards the beach, an unidentified person forcibly took her to a roadside where he raped her,” police inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai said.

The woman had gone to catch a train to Thivim, located in North Goa. She is said to be a regular visitor to Goa and was staying near its famous Palolem beach when the attack took place.

The British High Commission in New Delhi said consular staff were supporting the woman, "and are continuing to do all we can to assist her."
