Tributes paid to Ealing hospital worker beaten to death; son charged with murder

SON was charged with the murder of 'kind' Ealing Hospital worker in west London.

Hansa Patel, 62, was found suffering from head injuries at the home she shared with her husband and son Shanil Patel, 31, in Drew Gardens, Greenford.

Patel was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday(25).

The Metropolitan Police said that Patel died after being found with head injuries. Shanil Patel was arrested following the incident.

He was produced before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in London on Friday(27) and was charged with his mother’s murder.

Patel was remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday(1), the Met Police said.

A neighbour described the family as 'very nice and quiet' and said that Patel was hoping to retire this year at Ealing hospital.

“It’s awful, she was so kind, it’s so painful. They have lived here a long time, my heart sinks for them all," she told The Evening Standard.

Another neighbour Kharis George said that they were a great and respectful family and 'it is upsetting' what has happened.

Chief Superintendent Peter Gardner said: “I would like to reassure residents who will have noted a large police presence in the area that these officers are there to assist with the investigation and also to provide local reassurance and support.”

Shabana Mahmood says prison chaos forced controversial early release plan

Highlights

  • About 5,000 prisoners are due to be released earlier under the scheme.
  • Some offenders could leave prison after serving a third of their sentence.
  • Mahmood said prisons had fewer than 80 spaces when she became justice secretary.
  • Fewer than 1,800 spaces remain in men's prisons, which are 98 per cent full.

HOME SECRETARY Shabana Mahmood has defended a controversial early release scheme that could free thousands of prisoners earlier than expected, saying she was forced to include killers, rapists and child sex offenders because England and Wales were running out of prison places.
