TRIBUTES have been paid to Alpa Ashishbhai Shah, a tourism industry veteran, who passed away on Sunday (15) after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shah was Tour Team Leader at Citibond Travel, and was a respected travel professional who made significant contributions to the tourism industry.

Born in Mombasa, Shah began her career at Equatoria Travel, where she quickly established herself as a travel specialist. When Citibond Travel acquired Equatoria in 2006, she seamlessly transitioned to the new organisation, specialising in South and East African tours.

Throughout her career, she became renowned for her expertise and warm personality. She progressed from a Worldwide Tours Specialist to Tour Team Leader, earning respect and affection from colleagues and clients alike.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2019, she approached her illness with courage and determination, continuing to inspire those around her until her peaceful passing on 15 December, a statement said.

Hitesh Mehta, managing director of Citibond Travel, paid an emotional tribute, saying, "Alpa was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. True to her positive character, she fought the disease with incredible resolve and courage. She finally lost her battle and passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon. She touched the lives of many. This is a very sad time for Alpa’s family and her Citibond family. She was one of a kind and will be immensely missed by all of us.

"We are blessed to have had Alpa as part of our lives, and though we grieve her loss, we will always remember her with fondness and love. She will forever remain in our hearts. We pray for her family during this very difficult time."

She is survived by her husband and two daughters.

Lakshmi Mittal quits Britain for Switzerland and Dubai over inheritance tax concerns

Highlights

  • Lakshmi Mittal, worth over £15 bn, has moved his tax residence from UK to Switzerland with plans to spend most time in Dubai.
  • Inheritance tax concerns, not income tax, drove the decision of the "King of Steel" to leave after 30 years in Britain.
  • The departure marks another high-profile exit as chancellor Rachel Reeves prepares major tax rises in the coming Budget.
Lakshmi Mittal, one of Britain's wealthiest men, has ended his three-decade association with the UK, relocating his tax residence to Switzerland and planning to base himself in Dubai. The 74-year-old steel magnate, worth approximately £15.5 bn according to the Asian Rich List 2025, is the latest prominent entrepreneur to leave Britain amid Labour's tax reforms targeting the super-rich.

The Indian-born billionaire built his fortune through ArcelorMittal, the world's second-largest steelmaker, in which he and his family hold nearly 40 per cent ownership. Since arriving in London in 1995, Mittal became a prominent figure in British business, acquiring expensive properties including a £57 m mansion on Kensington Palace Gardens known as the "Taj Mittal."

An adviser familiar with Mittal's family plans told The Sunday Times that, inheritance tax was the decisive factor in the decision. "It wasn't the tax on income or capital gains that was the issue, the issue was inheritance tax."
