Neeraj Sood: Films shot in small towns are more likely to work!

Popular character actor Neeraj Sood, who got his start in the entertainment industry in the late 90s, is all set to tickle the funny bones of the audience with the upcoming film Shubh Mangal Savdhan. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, the movie is directed by R.S. Prasanna.

Sood, who is still remembered for his performance as a florist in Band Baaja Baarat, will be seen in an important role of Bhumi’s father in the movie.

After playing a range of character roles in movies like Matrubhoomi, Tere Naam, Agneepath, Band Baaja Baarat, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Mangal Pandey, Calcutta Mail, Phantom, Bhoothnath Returns, etc. the NSD actor is excited about his news release.

Talking about the film, Neeraj says, “Shubh Mangal Savdhan is a fun and frolic film, a family entertainer. With an amazing subject, the film highlights every character in a beautiful way.”

The actor, who has proved himself a versatile performer with excellent contributions to films and TV shows, says that working with new talents like Ayushmann and Bhumi make him really happy. Sharing his experience with the duo, the actor says, "I am glad to have worked with such great young talents like Ayushmann and Bhumi. Personally, we know one another since long but it's the first time we have come together for a film."

2017 has been a great year for films set in small towns and cities. First, it was Akshay Kumar's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and now the recent release Bareilly Ki Barfi, which is doing pretty well at the box office. Shubh Mangal Savdhan is also based in the hinterland.

Upon being asked about his take on such films finding a great audience, Sood explains, "Films shot in small towns are more likely to work, I guess because people tend to connect themselves more to such films. Through such films amazing talent is highlighted. In nutshell, these films are made on a decent budget and do great at the box office."

Produced by Anand L Rai, Shubh Mangal Savdhan is slated to release in cinemas on 1st September 2017.

TroyBoi returns to his Indian roots with Rootz EP using Lata Mangeshkar’s voice to redefine British diaspora music

Highlights:

  • TroyBoi’s five-track EP Rootz is a personal return to the sounds of his childhood, released via Ultra Records in September 2025.
  • The single Kabhi uses an officially cleared sample of Lata Mangeshkar’s vocal from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
  • Collaborations with Amrit Maan, Jazzy B and BombayMami plug Punjabi, Bhangra and south-Asian textures directly into modern trap and bass production.
  • This EP is part of a wider wave: British artists born into diasporas are using heritage not as garnish but as foundation.

Some albums hit you in ways you don’t see coming. Rootz is one of them. Not just another trap EP. TroyBoi, the London-born producer known for global bass and trap, has made something that’s also deeply personal. He didn’t just want to make music that bangs in clubs; instead, he wanted to reach back to the India of his childhood. And he did it with Rootz.

The track everyone’s talking about is Kabhi. Because it’s not just sampling Bollywood. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was officially cleared for use on a non-Bollywood release, a milestone reported by multiple outlets. It’s history. It’s memory. And it’s a bridge.
