Nawaz Sharif on verge of kidney failure: Report

FORMER Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s health condition has deteriorated and he is reportedly on the verge of a kidney failure, reports indicate.

Sharif, 68, is serving a 10-year jail term in a corruption case related to the ownership of luxury apartments in London. He was taken to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on July (13).

Sharif complained about his health on Saturday, following which a team of doctors from the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology carried out a detailed check-up.

They found that the water levels in Sharif’s body was low and this had made his heartbeat erratic. The urea in his blood has become very high and this could lead to kidney failure, the doctors said in their report.

Sharif has health issues like hypertension and diabetes.

The doctors recommended Sharif be shifted to a hospital, but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo insisted that medical facilities should be provided to him in the jail itself, according to a media report.

This was because he did not want to send out a weak signal to millions of party voters just hours before the crucial general election, sources close to Sharif was quoted as saying by The Tribune. They also added that the former premier might agree to hospitalisation sometime after Pakistan goes to polls on July 25.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam were incarcerated on July 13 as soon as they landed  from London, where they were taking care of Sharif’s wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz. Begum Kulsoom is currently undergoing cancer treatment and her condition is still critical.

Her condition began to deteriorate in April this year, after which she was moved to London for treatment.
