Mahinda Rajapaksa visits Ganga; Modi appreciates

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was on an official tour to India, visited Ganga, considered as 'Holy River' according to Hindu mythology, on Monday (10).  He shared pictures of the visit on twitter.  Rajapaksa also praised the efforts of his Indian counterpart for the Namami Gange initiative.

"Before leaving #Varanasi, I had the honour of visiting the sacred River Ganga. I commend PM @narendramodi ’s #NamamiGange effort, not only because of the river’s spiritual and cultural significance but also because it is host to approximately 40% of #India’s population," he tweeted.

The Clean Ganga or Namami Gange programme is a massive, Indian government-led initiative to cleanse the river.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick in appreciating Rajapaksa on his visit to Ganga.

"The Ganga is at the heart of our civilisation. It is our cultural and economic lifeline. I am glad you spent time in Varanasi and also went along the Ganga. The experience would have been wonderful," he said on twitter.
